After. Griffith removed that wall and broke up the composition of the cabinets, replacing the floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet with lowers topped with a counter and uppers. She was able to fit a microwave drawer in this section as well — a great solution for those who are not “supertall.” She removed the wall ovens, scooted the refrigerator over a little and added a pantry cabinet just past the refrigerator. This thoughtful move gave the kitchen a more open feel. Flooring. New flooring for the entire first floor was also a part of the project. Griffith helped her client choose a maple beechwood laminate, which resembles walnut, from CY Flooring to replace the old tile. “It’s a really good laminate; often when you use this much of it you can see the repeat of the grain patterns, but you don’t with this one,” Griffith says.Lighting. This farmhouse-style kitchen in Bozeman, Montana, is L-shaped with an island. Houzz recently surveyed more than 1,700 homeowners in various stages of a kitchen renovation project as part of its 2018 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study. Among other things, the study asked the homeowners about the layouts, storage solutions and design styles they chose for their remodel. The answers offer a look at what’s popular now in American kitchens.
1. Dedicated chopping and baking stations. Regular countertop height is fine for those casual weekly meals. But for larger, more involved recipes that require a lot of chopping, rolling or other strenuous maneuvers, a lower countertop is more ideal. That’s why some avid home cooks are gravitating toward dedicated chopping and baking stations that are often a continuation of a larger, standard-height island. This kitchen features some of the most popular choices among homeowners renovating their kitchens: white cabinets and countertop, wood floors, gray cabinets (on the island) and multicolored backsplash.Since survey respondents had completed a kitchen project in the previous 12 months, were working on one or planned to start one in the next three months, their responses provide a window on what’s trending in American kitchens now. Read on to find out which colors and materials were most popular.

They were walking around with tape measures trying to figure out how to make the awkward L-shaped kitchen and dining room work when Crestin pitched the idea of flip-flopping the two. With the kitchen moved into the dining room, suddenly they had the opportunity to bring more natural light into the dining area by adding windows where kitchen cabinets and a refrigerator used to be. Above, the kitchen area now features one wall of cabinets and appliances to the right and a center island to the left.
2. Matte black finishes. Last year, satin brass made its takeover of kitchens. This year, look out for matte black in bathrooms as well as kitchens. Homeowners looking for a statement-making look that’s contemporary and complements a variety of materials and styles are embracing this tough, versatile finish. Companies like Moen, whose matte black finish is shown here, are expanding their products to include more options in the durable finish.Find matte black hardware
3. Isn’t It Romantic?Right down to the photos of just the two of them, every detail in this room is about these partners as a couple, not as busy parents and professionals. This helps keep the space feeling calm and romantic.Notable detail: The paper peony over the bed is framed in plexiglass and backed with fabric that matches the wall paint. This is a nice way to enjoy a pretty paper flower for a good long time without it getting dusty.
4. Floating BedThe integrated bed platform, headboard and nightstands give this bedroom a clean, contemporary look. But the most relaxing bit is the sense that the bed is floating off the floor. This creates an uninterrupted view of the rug beneath it and doesn’t allow for any clutter to gather down there.Notable detail: The smoky glass pendant lights continue the orb shapes in the artwork across the entire extended-headboard wall.
17. Sitting Area SpaceIf you have the space, it’s wonderful to add comfortable seating in your bedroom, whether for morning coffee, catching up with your partner after work or reading during the evening. This one with its two comfy armchairs and tufted hexagonal ottoman had many Houzzers ready to put their feet up in here. Notable detail: The size and placement of the area rug is just right.
10. Casual and calm modern bedrooms. You can’t decorate your way to a good night’s sleep. In other words, if you’re looking for a calm, relaxing bedroom — ideal for a restful night — you don’t want the space dripping with ornate decor, busy patterns or eye-opening color. Instead, a pared down, verging-on-minimalist look that incorporates soothing neutrals, soft fabrics and simple, functional pieces is the direction homeowners are heading.See the 20 Most Popular Bedrooms of 2017
5. Uncover your tabletops. To tackle cluttered end, coffee and dining tables in your home, I recommend you get three large shopping bags and label them “toss,” “donate” and “relocate.” Then walk quickly from room to room and scan your table surfaces. Remove anything that is not decorative or used daily, and put it in the appropriate bag. Once you’ve cleared all tables, take a look at the items in your “relocate” bag and find them a permanent home. Toss or donate the rest. Resist the urge to collect all items in a single box or bag and then placing that in the garage or a closet, as many of my clients have done over the years. Then they hire me to clear out boxes and bags of stuff they likely should have gotten rid of years before.Browse coffee tables
Kitchen at a GlanceWho lives here: A family of fourWhere: Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los AngelesDesigner: Sandra Fox InteriorsThe backstory: The owners of this 1937 Los Angeles home, who use it as a part-time residence, were planning to spend more time here, and they wanted to enjoy time in the kitchen together as a family. To make the room more welcoming, they dumped the former dark finishes and replaced them with lighter colors for a bright, open-feeling space.
The wall that got bumped back was load-bearing and supported a bathtub on the second floor, so Daher had to get creative in hiding the columns and structural beam that bore the weight of the upper floor. She buried the columns within the cabinets and turned the ceiling beam into an asset, cladding it in cabinet material and adding pin lights underneath for ambiance. To modernize the space, Daher selected cabinets in a reconstituted anigre, a species of wood with a subtle grain that’s made into a pulp and applied as a veneer and then stained. “The beauty is that it stains like wood because it is wood, but there’s no visible grain, so it feels very smooth and contemporary,” Daher says. The gray ceramic tile backsplash is stacked vertically and has lavender undertones that complement the custom purple range hood.
