Banquette with the Trip-Trap chairs. If we did a storage bench, perhaps with storage behind the back, too -- we could contain all the art/homeschooling supplies. For example, if we used Ikea shoe shelves, and put cushions on the tilt-out part, with a bench with a seat you can lift, like a toy bench, it would provide storage, but take up less room than the current cubby system.
This room has the makings of a great, kid-proof design. If one made an oilcloth slipcover for the cushion, and skipped the loose throw pillows in favor of some more stable ones that stand up on their own, and fit together so they aren't jostled about, the rest of the ideas are already well on their way to suitable for small children. Note: high shelves, so you can put fragile decorative items out of reach, molding with easy-to-clean glossy paint, easy to sweep hard floor, lovely curvaceous table with no pointy corners to injure little heads.
I think moving the dining room table into the corner would do wonders for our space considerations. We could do it if I could get the china & glasses collection down to the size that would fit in the cabinets we're putting in.
Ikea has a new line of living room shelving/cabinets, some of which are nicely shallow. We could do a built-in look like this, with those, and it would save significant space, compared to the China cabinet.
If we can't do a full-on knock-down of the wall, perhaps a pass through might work for us.

Corner cupboard with a little surface for serving, also the chandelier
I LIKE the clear, Wonder Woman-esque chairs and the banquette with hidden storage, the chandelier, the neat table.
colorful, fun, casual
There is something so Manhattan, so Aunt Billie-like about this room. Cool ceiling!
