Designers use layering and repetition of elements and motifs to achieve a professional look. Most people get the concept of layering when it comes to fashion. In design it isn't much different. Pick something you love, like this patterned headboard, then repeat the color or the pattern. The artistry lies in stopping before the look becomes too matchy (it always helps to toss in something unexpected to achieve this). Subtlety is key. Drapery, wallpaper, pillows, throws, bedding, accessories — all are great options for layering in a bedroom. You be the judge as to how much is enough.
Don't match textiles and furniture — relate them. A designer's task is to create a collected look. Look for a collection of pieces with something in common, such as style, motif, color, history, material or mood.
More is more in this department. Professionals use fabric yardage that's two and a half to three times the width of the window for fully functional drapes. With fixed side panels (for show only), you can get away with fabric twice as wide as the window. Don't skimp.
be sure to place lighting all the way into the back corners of a space — nothing shrinks a room faster than poor lighting.
If your living room has an element (door, window, fireplace, radiator) that prevents you from placing furniture near the walls, try pulling the arrangement toward the center of the room instead. Use the symmetry of a matching pair of sofas to counteract the chaos of the entries and exits, and add a cozy area rug to anchor the conversation area.
Artful. If you've invested in art, let it determine your living room's layout. This room's sectional sofa seems to disappear into the wall, allowing the art and accessories to take center stage. The playful tufted ottomans add to the room's artful vibe.
Small. Smaller living rooms for bold style and cozy furniture layouts. A settee in lieu of a traditional sofa in the middle of the room with two armless chairs. Bench behind the settee can provide additional seating.can
Symmetrical. Fireplace is focal point. Dividing the layout equally on either side allows guests to sit directly across from one another. Usually, symmetrical layouts like this dictate a more formal setting.
Common condition in a smaller room with lots of big windows. Pull the furniture away from the walls. This classic arrangement makes a small room feel larger, with many seats for guests to choose from. Ottoman with tray for hard surfaces in lieu of coffee table. Now curtains have a natural place to fall.
“The sitting room, although the less formal of the two reception rooms, still needed to be elegant, composed and organised. ‘The room was quite narrow, and the clients wanted to be able to fit up to eight guests around the dining table, so we went for an oval shape,’
Symmetry. Mirror reflecting another room (can part of dining room mirror reflect beautiful parts of living room?) Flowers. Maybe keep table set for the next meal.
Symmetry can make your dining room feel fancier. Formal symmetry (where two sides of a room are close to mirror images of each other) dresses up a space. In the dining room, try hanging framed artworks on either side of a large mirror for a classic, elegant look. Or place matching lamps, sculptures or vases at either end of a buffet table — the more objects repeated on each side of the room, the more formal the space will feel.”

Give furniture breathing room. Resist overcrowding. Gracious living means space to maneuver with ease. don’t need to fill up a space. Spend more on fewer but better-quality pieces.

Hang your curtains at least 15cm above the window frame. For a more dramatic look, hang them even higher, from the ceiling or just below the cornices. This will lift the eye and make a low ceiling appear higher. Curtains should frame a window, so extend beyond the edges of the window so curtains hang OUTSIDE the edges of the window.
