Living Room Ideas
CHOOSE MUTED SEASIDE COLORS. Typical coastal decor of white, blue and red stripes with a few anchor motifs are predicative and prescriptive. This room features an elegant Scandinavian palette of chalky blue-grays and acid yellows, bringing to mind stormy seas and windswept dunes. The coastal theme continues in subtle details: a restrained boat painting, chunky knitted poufs (think fishermen’s sweaters) and an ultra-minimalist seagull figurine. They all signify the seaside, but there’s not a seashell-decorated statue in sight.
The white sofa is anchored to the ground (and prevented it from looking to frivolous) by a full, tufted, black pouf as coffee table. The metal side table adds glam, while the gorgeous cushions add color and and chic vibe to the space. The David Burdeny photograph above the sofa adds a touch of old-world classic glamour while visually elongate and expand the space.
Fun and eclectic small apartment overlooking the Vancouver harbour. Major elements (sofa, coffee table, console table, and wall) are kept white to enlarge this small space and battle the constantly raining Vancouver weather. The pale blue Greek key rug adds softness to the space, and cushions add pops of color. Love the cobalt blue armchairs which balance out all the white, and the curtains with busy bright green leafs bring in a feeling of Palm Springs into the space and add energy.
Concrete fireplace surround extends all the way to the ceiling, oak planks add warmth to balance out the coldness of the concrete. Gorgeous dark velvet blue sofa contrasts well with light wood floors. This is a great design lesson on mixing different textures. That 16-foot-long expanse of sliding doors invite nature in and is so gorgeous!
A screen composed of wood slats redirects the flow of traffic upon entry to the house, creating a sense of separation between the entryway and adjacent living room. The angled birth slabs fastened on white-coated steel from the ceiling provide privacy for the family room while permitting light to come in. Great idea for a narrow old townhouse!
A dramatic and dark accent wall in the living room pairs best with light furniture and flooring. Here, the white sofa and the various artworks stand out against the wall. The glass coffee table balances bulky furniture. The chrome curved edges is a playful twist to the ubiquitous waterfall coffee table.
Love this clean living room with fun pops of colour: the dark wood floor (mocha) and the dark blue sofa (oh so handsome!) are broken up by a beautiful light grey rug with geometric patterns. Lucite side table on the left balances out the heavy sofa. The large artwork adds pops of colour and injects fun into this space. Sofa: Room & Board; area rug: Pottery Barn; lamp: Target; coffee table: Cost Plus World Market
A colorful and eclectic living room: the mid-tone gray wall paint (Englewood Cliffs No. 1607, Benjamin Moore) contrasts well with the while molding in the room. The room would've been too dark (with the wall paint and black hardwood floors) if it were not for ample natural light and a light-coloured rug (from West Elm). The big leafy plant adds an organic element.
This pouf ottoman with fluffy seat and brass frames ($1,823) paired with, say, a deep purple tufted sofa, will look fun, glamorous, and eclectic.
This deep purple tufted sofa ($999) paired with fluffy pouf ottoman with brass frames will look regal, glamorous, and eclectic.
Cumulus Hollywood Regency Navy Blue Velvet/Gold Armchair $1,748
Stunning industrial chic loft in London. LOVE the following items: glass coffee table (Alfies Antique Market), Kasbah wool rug and marble side table (West Elm), and the table lamps with hollow gold frame and black shade. (The midcentury armchairs are from Circus Antiques.)
bench / coffee table
Love the exquisite side table with marble oval top and intricate gold frame.
Rug from Elte. Also love the console table by the window and the horse lamps on top. The low round-based lamp on the left of the sofa is also really nice.
Love the dark blue grayish sofa and the oval glass table with gold legs.
Love this white credenza with gold details!
LOVE the white credenza with gold edges, handles, and inlays. It also lights up the otherwise dark and masculine living room. Also LOVE the velvety dark grayish sofa.
Across from the sofa, Shadrick installed a daybed. This allows guests to face the sofa or the armchairs that sit beyond it. The rug adds a lot of texture and color and helps cozy up the seating area in front of the fireplace.
The room is long and narrow, and the clients wanted to be able to seat as many people as possible when they entertained. Shadrick placed a console behind the sofa to push it out into the room a bit and help center it on the fireplace. This also helped bring light to the seating area without taking up room with floor lamps or occasional tables. The art is bookended with two metal mirrors that hail from Morocco but were discovered in a thrift shop.
Long low table using a piece of wood with an even edges under the TV against a red brick wall. So much character!
Blackened steel and walnut cabinets and shelves against a red brick wall. Masculinity and character.
An airy, open space that are colorful and comfortable, breezy and loungy like a hotel, with melded vintage and modern accents. | such unique and beautiful built-in bookshelves beside the TV.
Love the unique built-in shelves beside the TV and fireplace: glass shelves on brass frames with antiquated mirrors in the back. So unique and beautiful! Dark (sofa, lower cabinets) vs light (rug, wall), glass (shelves, coffee table) vs brass metal (shelve frames, standing lamp), square (sofa, coffee table, TV wall) vs round (standing lamp). This is a perfect combo of colorful yet airy and breezy, interesting yet relaxed and loungy, contemporary vs antique.
Love the marble TV wall and the fireplace. I'd paint the walls on the left and right a different color (or keep it white).
How to incorporate blue and red. The unique bookshelves / fireplace wall paint is BJ Lead Gray in a high-gloss lacquer finish. The rug can be found at Pottery Barn, esalerugs.com, Etsy, or Ebay.
For large living rooms: erect an accent wall to divide the room but do not complete seal off the wall. Use a fireplace that can be enjoyed on both sides of the accent wall.
Fireplace. The stones surrounding it are from Stone Tile. This is a good example that the fireplace doesn't have to be in the living room or under a TV.
Comfortable masculine living room layered with texture. Love the tan leather sofa (Jardan Marvin), the dark carpet whose color coordinates with the coffee table and the window seal, and the wallpaper. The mirror reflects light and brightens the otherwise dark room. The various shapes further add to the texture.
Find a patterned rug like this one that brings lots of sensuality, movement and interest to this floor.
Charcoal IKEA Kivik sectional sofa with a dramatic black-white rug from CB2.
Gray wall paint + yellow console table
Coffee table: an old dining table with the legs cut down to lower it. Beautiful shape, style and scale fit for this house. Lovely built-in shelves. Also love the IKEA Nockeby sofa. Rug: Surya
Love the very light grey paint color, which is reinforced by grey sofa and dining chair cushions but softened by warm wood furniture.
Love this media centre set in an receding wall with pot lights above. The color keeps the space calm and not busy, despite the various floating shelves. The floating shelves add storage space without feeling disorganized, and the lower cabinets span the whole wall making it an expansive and generous space.
Fireplace wall: clad in a tile that is meant to look like oxidized metal. It was purchased from Walker Zanger, but many companies carry similar tile. The rest of the room is painted in BM Harbor Gray AC-25.
TV credenza: Design Within Reach. The wow factor in this room is the floor which was from an old gym floor with 25% painted boards and 75% unpainted.
The lush green view is amplified by the large windows. Love the freestanding fireplace. The furniture is a mixture of contemporary (sofa) and mid-century (TV credenza).
This is an example of combining a contemporary kitchen with an eclectic living room. The warm wood wall, benched seat on the sofa, and beautiful rug all add texture and luxe to the room.
Fireplace: instead of simple tile-surrounded affair, create an ornamented mantel to draw attention and make the fireplace the focal point of the room. Because the room is small, keep the mantel the same color as the walls (white) to prevent it from looking too crowded. The ceiling is very high, so the tall sculptural woodbox draws the eye up.
The wall paint is unique (Wall paint: Newburg Green, Benjamin Moore) and good for a more sophisticated good. Love the buffet table as a media console (Dumont Buffet: West Elm).
Love the deep blue sofa!! The legs keep the sofa a few inches from the floor - preventing it from looking too heavy. I would replace the colorful rug with an off-white or light beige rug.
Gold-toned, glass-topped table from Urban Outfitters
Built-in media wall (I would give the TV more space). Moderate-grade materials: For a unit measuring 12 feet wide and 8 feet high, expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,000 for moderate-grade finishes and appointments. Higher end: A more upscale unit, with more bells and whistles and a stained wood finish, would probably run you $3,000 to $6,000. DIY: $2,000
Fireplace, mantel, TV on top, concealed storage on either side. Love the design, but I would add some color.
Rug: Elte. Coffee table: West Elm.
How to combine styles: A simple but dynamic entry way vignette is made by combining a contemporary console table, traditional polished nickel buffet lamps, a silver leaf contemporary mirror and a porcupine quill storage box for keys and mail.
A cozy and fresh living room - the piano is flanked by shelves both open and closed. The color palette is kept neutral (beige) and details are in the yellow pick-me-ups.
Wallpaper in the entryway - now that's a brilliant idea!
Beautiful eclectic B&W living room - LOVE the sofa and rug. The color and details in the crown molding near the ceiling, surrounding the white door, and underneath the windows all bring the entire room together really well.
Beautiful eclectic B&W living room - Most furniture are kept white to lighten up the matte black room. Love the mantel. I would put the TV on top of the mantel and have bookshelves instead of picture ledges on the left side.
Beautiful eclectic B&W living room - The room is painted a very dramatic black. All other decor and furnishing are white (desk and chair, floating shelves), off-white (sofa and rug), or glass (coffee table) to lighten up the room. LOVE the style and color of the sofa. LOVE how an office is also incorporated into the room. The green leafy wallpaper behind french doors create the illusion of an garden (I wouldn't purposely add it into the room if they weren't already there).
Sofa by Pimlico; coffee table by Kubrik, Habitat.
The space for the living room is so long, the designers created two seating areas. The sofas look like they have varying shades, in truth, it's a trick of the light. The seat cushions are in a tweed-like material, while the base and back cushions are velvet. Love the rug with light blue waves (rug by Jan Kath).
An inviting and relaxing living room. Love the built-in TV cabinet: the floating console houses the audiovisual equipment; the recess hides the TV (almost makes the TV part of the artwork on the wall); the dark cabinets add color and drama but is lightened (and made less formal) with leather pulls and a light wood top.
