Get the nightstand height right. There will be those who disagree, but the best nightstand height is one that’s a few inches higher than the mattress. The reason is that you’re far less likely to knock stuff over with your pillow or a midnight reaching for a water glass compared with a nightstand the same height or lower than your mattress. It’s also often more difficult to reach items on low-slung night tables when sitting up in bed. This small desk serves as a nightstand and is a healthy few inches taller than the mattress.
Using subtly different whites and off-whites can also highlight the play of textures in a space. Notice here how the quilted spread is a different tone from the tufted bed frame, and also different from the incredibly touchable striped blanket. The feather headdress wall hanging is a bit creamier still, making it an eye-catching focal piece even without an electric hue. The rich textural palette of the room is allowed to shine, but the variety of color tones helps the eye pick up all the different layers.
Twin beds. These beds are U.K. single beds, which are approximately 35 inches wide, as opposed to American twin beds, which are usually 39 inches wide. Those precious extra 8 inches leave a comfortable space between the two. Also worth noticing is the smart reading-light strategy — sconces mounted to the wall save space.
In the quest for colors that soothe and relax, I always recommend turning to nature for inspiration. One such hue is the color of the sky on a crisp, clear day. This is one of my favorite bedroom shades for folks who want something a little more colorful than gray but don’t want anything too dark. Look for a light blue with just a hint of gray to avoid a pastel baby blue that’s more appropriate for a nursery.
Put style before size in the bedroom. Many boutique hotel rooms are tiny, but you’d probably still think they were great if you checked into them. They prove that when it comes to the bedroom, style and comfort beat space every time. As long as you have room for the essentials — a bed (obviously), somewhere to store clothes and a bedside table — then that’s really all you need. If you can squeeze in an armchair and a TV table, as seen in this luxurious yet compact space, then so much the better.
This would work well in our space: hanging pendant light (perhaps with a mirror hanging on the wall behind the light) above each bedside table. Would add instant mood lighting and depth, while freeing up/decluttering table space. Also, the light/mirror combo would provide excellent balance and character, bounce the natural light around the room, too, and make a great focal point.

Master bedroom, bed wall- I actually like this wallpaper. Maybe look for a similar print in fabric form to spray starch onto the wall (more flexibility)
Plan a serene writing spot. Studies show that keeping a gratitude journal is one of the best ways to boost happiness. Think about turning a quiet corner into a writing spot, like the serene space here. Try putting down your electronic tablet and channeling your inner Victorian: Hunt for your prettiest notebook and fountain pen and practice your long-neglected handwriting.
Scale it up to trick the eye. In a compact bedroom, use the play-with-scale technique often adopted by hotel chains to make their rooms feel large and sumptuous: Use a big headboard to fool the eye into thinking the room is more spacious than it really is. An upholstered one in soft linen or wool, accompanied by a pile of pillows and soft, layered bedding, will further emphasize the feeling of luxury and comfort, and add a sense of importance to a small space.

Faux headboard. Don’t have a headboard? Let a rectangle of paint define the bed. Match it to a side table, and top it with a shelf to enhance the effect. Even without anything else colorful in the room, the space will feel lively enough to inspire you in the morning.
