The luscious living wall adds soft greenery that really brings the terrace to life. “Often, the problem with patios and terraces is, it’s quite hard landscaping,” Orchard says. “Yes, you can have potted plants, but a living wall really changes how the space works. “As they turn from the side of the house, round the corner, people stop dead in their tracks. They look at the wall and say, ‘Wow, I wasn’t expecting that!’ Then, when you’re inside, you’re looking out onto it too. It looks nice from the house as well as outside,” he says.
If you dislike bending down to load and unload your dishwasher, this may be the solution for you. Building your dishwasher into a taller cabinet — similar to how you would with an eye-level oven — will be easier on your back. Incorporate a drawer that can be used to store anything from dishwasher tablets to plates or chopping boards below the dishwasher, to make use of the extra space. You can finish the height of the cabinet at the top of the dishwasher or continue it to a higher level with additional storage — or even a microwave space — above the dishwasher.
Always make sure the drawers or cabinets where flatware, glasses and dishes are stored are close to your dishwasher. This kind of functionality and practicality is essential to any kitchen design. The location of all kitchen appliances in relation to each other, and to the storage in your kitchen, plays an important role in making it a pleasurable place to work in.
If you decide to position your dishwasher next to your sink, the next consideration should be whether to put it on the left or right. There is no correct answer; a right-handed person typically will hold a dish in the left hand and use the right hand to scrape or wash the dish, therefore making it easier to load dishes into a dishwasher positioned to the left of the sink. The opposite applies to a left-handed person.
Just beyond the island, Bender removed that pesky wing wall — the column contains the support post that was inside the wall. A household command central workstation looks out across the breakfast room. “They also wanted some sort of screen in here to watch TV,” Bender says. Placing it here allowed it to serve the kitchen and the breakfast room.
As you’ve seen, simple Shaker-style cabinets and wooden pulls fit perfectly with the practical and unpretentious English country kitchen aesthetic, pairing particularly well with similarly subdued Georgian details. So it’s no surprise that other Shaker details crop up frequently too. Among them is the wooden Shaker peg rail, which often circled the rooms of Shaker homes. In this kitchen in far northern England, Lake District-based designers Lund and Law used a Shaker peg rail with a shelf for cup and teapot storage.

A pocket door is an especially good feature for a bright color because it can be hidden away or brought out depending on when you want the drama. Also notice here the back-painted bookcase and colorful chairs that give this home office a supercharged atmosphere.

There are two ways to sit at a kitchen island: perching and, less commonly, sinking in and staying awhile. One can really enjoy the latter when bellied up to this Juno Beach, Florida, kitchen island thanks to custom upholstered dining benches from the project’s designer, Krista + Home. - unsure how this makes me feel

New board-formed-concrete planters flank the front door. They contain a collection of exotic cactuses with shapes that provide contrast to the strict verticality of the new cedar screen behind them. Gliksman used cactuses the homeowners already had and added new ones as well. She crafted the house numbers out of polystyrene in a midcentury modern font and had them attached to the boards during the concrete installation. The result is that they are etched into the concrete.
Undermount sinks get attached to the underside of the countertop for a smooth look and an easy-to-clean design. Undermount and apron-front sinks often require professional installation and can only be mounted to a sturdy and nonporous countertop material, which can add considerable cost to the project. Installation is more expensive than for a drop-in sink, because the countertop opening has to be cut precisely. It’s also worth noting that while I have heard of successful applications with wood countertops, extra care must be taken to protect the wood from water. Some laminate countertop manufacturers also claim that you can undermount a sink to their material. Discuss it with a design or build pro or a countertop retailer to see if this is an option for you. ROCKWELL DEVELOPERS LLC Depending on your particular undermount sink, you may have some options regarding the reveal — how much or little of the top edge of the sink is visible just below the inside edge of the countertop. A positive reveal leaves a small portion of the sink edge exposed. This is the easiest type of installation, as the cutout doesn’t have to be as precise as it does for a zero reveal. It also allows you to...
Apron-front sinks, also known as farmhouse sinks, have a broad, exposed front edge and are usually quite wide and deep. These charming sinks have come a long way from their humble beginnings in the 18th century as a butler’s sink. The size and shape were introduced to accommodate larger objects, and the sinks were quickly put to use to wash everything from household items to clothes and even children. They’ve evolved through the years to become one of the most popular styles of kitchen sinks. While these sinks were traditionally single-bowl, they now come in divided two-bowl configurations. They are also available in a wide variety of materials, such as fireclay, cast iron, stainless steel, natural stone, manufactured solid surfaces and copper. Find a kitchen remodeler near you Neil Kelly Company These are certainly attractive sinks, but there are a few issues to keep in mind if you are considering installing one in your kitchen. Apron-front sinks are typically wider, deeper and heavier than other sink types, so they may require at least a 36-inch-wide sink cabinet. The sink cabinet also must be able to accommodate the apron front. If you go for a stainless steel or copper vers...
Outdoor screen. Outdoor audio systems have long since taken their place as an entertaining essential, but why not add visual entertainment as well? Large outdoor screens are now readily available, but it’s the location of the screen at this Phoenix pool that stands out. It’s perfectly placed for viewing both around and in the pool. When not in use, it retracts out of the way.
Pool ledge. Ledges, also known as Baja shelves, Acapulco shelves, sun shelves and a handful of other names, got their start in resort pools but have become popular in home pools as well. They’re essentially shallow shelves, set between 3 and 18 inches below the waterline and extending anywhere from 4 feet to the width of the pool. The edge bordering the main area of the pool can be straight, curved or include steps for a gentle access to the deeper water, as with this pool in Austin, Texas. 9th Avenue Designs Set a couple of chaises on a ledge, possibly with a table nearby, and you have a place to relax that’s in the water without being fully submerged. With a drink and plenty of sunscreen, the owners of this pool in Cleveland will be all set. Ledges offer advantages you might not recognize at first. They’re a perfect splashing spot for youngsters (but remember to keep an eye on them at all times). They’re easier to navigate for those with mobility issues. They’re also a great spot for your dog to enjoy the water with an easy entry and exit. Anyone who has had to help a wet dog out of the pool will appreciate this feature.
Water spray. Blend a waterfall and a bubbler and you get an arching spray that cools off swimmers or simply adds to the ambiance. It’s a win-win for kids: They can swim and play in the sprinklers at the same time.
Just Add Water Waterfalls, bubblers and sprays add the gentle sound of splashing water to a pool setting. They also help block noise, both inside the pool and from outside the yard, aerate the water and add a focal point or two to the space. 14. Cascading streams. In this pool outside Atlanta, twin waterfalls drop from the upper deck into the pool. Combined with the rock wall, they add a natural touch that echoes the surrounding countryside.
Accent lights. If multiple colors aren’t your style, a more neutral lighting design can give you a peaceful and serene look while highlighting key features. Uplights along the catch basin of this Dallas pool give the stone walls a nighttime glow, while other lights around the sides of the pool gently outline the space.
Decorative edging. Small inset tiles along the edge of these pool steps reflect the Arts and Crafts style of the Utah home. They also subtly define the edges of the steps.

Pingpong. Table tennis is easy to learn but difficult to get really good at, which makes it a game that can be played and enjoyed by a wide range of ages and ability levels. Keep your pingpong table on hardscaping like a concrete or stone patio — if kept on grass, you’ll soon have a big rectangular dead spot in your lawn! Pingpong tables can also get damaged by weather extremes, so consider having your table put on casters to make it easier to roll into a garage or storage area to protect it when not in use.

Cole says a decorative bowl is a must-have entry element. “Whether it’s full of keys or chocolates, there seems to always be a functional reason to have a decorative bowl on your entry console,” Cole says.
This wider view of the cooking zone shows how a bump-out gives the cooktop prominence. “We wanted to break up that straight line and provide more interest for that wall,” Barnhart says. “It makes the cooktop feel more special.”
A 30-inch stainless steel double wall oven includes convection baking and a self-cleaning feature. The cabinet above has tray dividers for baking sheets. A large, deep drawer below offers space for oversize items.
Byers is a fan of adding a recycling center to a kitchen — usually a cabinet with pull-out units containing different bins. “We typically position one under a sink,” he says. George Robinson Kitchens Some units allow food waste to be directly scraped from the countertop into a caddy below.
Base drawers another way to optimize your storage, Lennox says. “Drawers are so versatile and are almost always soft close these days. They’ll take a lot of weight — [more than 150 pounds] with some brands — so you can store everything from potatoes to entire dinner sets in them.” Both Kipling and Lennox point out that drawers and other pull-out storage can help to reduce food waste, as you can easily see what you have. “Drawers are fully telescopic — everything in the back of the cupboard comes right out to the front, so you can have a bird’s eye view of the contents,” Lennox says. “This minimizes duplication and food waste.”
Kipling has some advice on how to get the most out of your pantry. “Do an inventory of what you want to store … and measure the tallest, widest, smallest and heaviest items to make sure everything has a place and is easily accessible,” she says. “Pullout shelves or shallow drawers are ideal at the lower levels, especially if the cupboard is deep, so you don’t have to kneel down and reach for the items at the back,” Kipling says. She suggests that pantry pullouts above the countertop are less practical because you may not be able to see inside them. Here she recommends shallower shelves and a rack on the back of the door for condiments, spices or — if you have enough cupboard depth — larger items such as pasta boxes.
Smart idea to run the counter material part way up the wall behind the stove and then install the decorative time above that to protect it from splashes.
