Who: Oren Dagan of SOD Home Group
Where: Northern and Southern California, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Ventura County and Los Angeles County
In his own words: “I get real satisfaction from building someone’s dream home.”
The best remodel is one that exceeds your expectations in terms of quality yet stays within your budget. Oren Dagan, the CEO of SOD Home Group, says the key to achieving this is finding a builder who focuses on customer service from the beginning of the project and has a clear view of a client’s priorities. This focus, combined with skilled project management, makes for a much smoother remodeling process overall. “If a project is planned right from the beginning, it will go faster without going over budget,” Dagan says. Read on to discover his advice on what homeowners can do to set their home remodel up for success.

A service-oriented approach. Dagan was working as a project manager for a construction company when he started building his own home. After experiencing problems throughout the process, even with his expertise, he realized he wanted to take a different approach to residential construction. “My focus is always on how I can add more value and offer better service for my clients,” Dagan says. He opened SOD Home Group in 2008. The company has offices in San Jose, Irvine, Encino and San Francisco.
Creating your vision. Dagan says the most important result in any remodel is that it reflects a client’s vision for his or her home. “We should see your vision and understand what is in your mind for the remodel,” Dagan says. He adds that homeowners need to be sure that their priorities are kept at the forefront throughout the renovation process.
Ready to tackle a remodel of your home? Below, Dagan has some tips to help the process go smoothly.

1. Ask the Right Questions
Understand exactly what will be included in your remodel by asking questions and by saying what you want rather than making assumptions. “It’s important that we understand exactly what you want to be able to build your dream home,” Dagan says.
When beginning their remodel, the owners of this Palo Alto home set out to achieve a modern and functional home with clean lines and a better indoor-outdoor flow. To deliver on those goals, Dagan installed contemporary bifold doors between the living room and the backyard to create an expansive opening. His team also redid the landscape, with a new deck just outside the living room and an outdoor lounge with a fire feature across the lawn.

2. Get to Know Your Team
Another way to set your remodel up for smooth sailing is to get to know the professionals involved in the project. “This is something that is often overlooked, but the benefits of knowing who to get in contact with are huge,” Dagan says. Develop a relationship with the people working on the project, not just the salespeople, he says.
The team for this new build in Redwood City included the homeowners’ architect as well as the design, building and landscaping entities of SOD Home Group. Dagan’s team worked closely with the homeowners on the interior design, a new outdoor space, a solar system and a separate guest space that can double as a rental unit. “We all worked as a team,” he says.

3. Be Clear About Your Wish List
Make your priorities for the project known from the start. Your team should clearly understand everything, Dagan says, from the smallest details to the overall vision for each space, so it can create a home you’ll love.
For this new build in San Jose, the owners’ priority was having a space for entertaining that would fit with the contemporary style of the home’s interiors. Dagan added bifold doors opening to a large ipe deck with a cantilevered cedar-and-steel shade structure overhead. The sleek design captures the contemporary look the owners were after and provides a shaded indoor-outdoor space for hosting guests. He fulfilled the rest of the clients’ wish list with a new kitchen, a welcoming entry and a custom bedroom layout. “The family can grow here for many years,” Dagan says.
