SY: ok! I think to mesh your many ideas and the fact that we also have a mud cabinet on this wall, I'll go *something* like this for the coffee station. Eliminating doors will save you money and make for maximally easy access. Keeping uppers, with just a hint of open shelves/glass shelves for mugs and pretty things, will maximize the areas's storage purposes. JS ❤️
As long as it doesn’t turn into this - this looks like a mess. SY: You can leave the bifold doors off, certainly. I was hearing you say you like not to see the mess / to maximize the storage and function. So in my mind that calls for a closed space that you can open and leave open if you wish/when in use. But leaving off the doors will save you money!
SY: just the corner detail over by the fridge - this is all the open / visible cabinetry there is. Besides the shelf over the dog bowls. Ok? JS: looks good!
SY: did you want me to design the pantry? You can cut costs in here by making it simple open shelves like this, the lowers deeper than the uppers. But of course you can add doors and drawers as you wish, for more $$$. JS This design is a dream come true! I love it!
SY: very affordable, no counter, and still amazing storage JS: also amazing
SY: full height, no counter, a few more bells and whistles than the image to the left. JS _ I feel like the other one is more how we live / would be more useful BUT the thing I like about this one is the two white pull out drawers ~ maybe for like an appliance or something .
SY: This is more expensive, but also perhaps more functional. I would be inclined to leave everything open but add some pullouts to the lower shelves if the budget allows. But again, I'm not sure I'm designing this space? JS: love this one too
SY: full height with counter (and great finishes that would be great in your scheme). If you want drawers in here, just know that drawers are expensive!
SY: pulling this up from below because if you're going to have a counter, I like this wood one. JS: Not a walk in pantry, but so awesome. Organization is my love language. ? SY: lol, got it. JS: HA! I think I have mentioned organization many times. LOL. JS: I also love this one because it’s shallow - a walk in one would be nice because of the space even for like paper towels and cleaning supplies too but I like the idea of shallower shelves too so you can see everything.
SY: if it is in your cabinetry budget, it's nice to have an easy access place for paper towels. (If you use paper towels.) JS: ohhhh such a great idea!
SY: your coffee area! Bifold doors that open out like this. ok? Note that JS: I hadn’t have even thought about bifold doors ~ I was thinking more about seeing the mugs and everything. I’m not opposed to either ~ but will the doors get in the way? We make a lot of coffee and then when we have people over we make even more and I worry the doors would get in the way. I was kind of thinking / wondering if we could do something cool at the coffee station ~ like the recipe background or something warm.
SY: like this for you, with a tall mud cabinet connected to it. JS: yes!!!!!
SY: this! You could put a shelf microwave in here rather than island too. JS: this is cool too.
SY: yours is wider than this (72" rather than, say, 48 or 52 shown here.)JS love thus but we don’t drink really (maybe a few times a year) so could we do like individual cubbies for coffee mugs (that may be expensive? Or even shelves they would sit on ... the coffee bar is actually one of the things I’m most excited about ? .
SY: you could have two 36" sections like this instead, but those retractable doors are more expensive than bifold. JS I was envisioning one big area ~ do we need doors? Would it look too unfinished without them
SY: HEY! how about we get you a spice pullout by the range that is an UPPER cabinet so you can see things! You can put utensils and hotpads and such down below counter. JS ❤️❤️
SY: here's a good idea for your hood/range - but it doesn't have the little spice areas on the side you're talking about. Those usually mean the hood creates a niche for a (usually wider than 30") range, without uppers on either side, or in a spot where the uppers can go all the way to the counter and you don't miss the lost counterspace. All things considered, I think in your kitchen we better keep the hood cabinet up off the counters, and get you a ledge behind, and plenty of spice/oil/pot and pan storage right nearby. JS great idea and way to get both!! ❤️ love!
SY: bringing this image back up to the top for the lovely base trim on these cabinets instead of standard toe kick. You may have to forego it for budget, of course. JS: Love the slate floor. SY: pretty. talk to me about flooring in your new space(s). JS: We were originally thinking EITHER all engineered wood in kitchen and living room (same flooring) OR one thing in kitchen and eventually putting hardwood in the living room (hopefully sooner than later since we now have two dogs). SY: got it, ok! Js I’m not sure what base trim is ??? do you mean at the bottom? I like this whole look here except I would change the island to blue which probably then wouldn’t go with the floor - lol!
SY: base trim instead of recessed toe kick for your cabinetry - see Whittney Parkinson cabinetry bases in adjacent images. Makes it feel like furniture. JS I see! If we can’t do this for all of the cabinets maybe we could do it for the island? I love the idea of the island looking like furniture
SY: this kitchen by Whittney Parkinson seems like good direction, no? dark and light and natural elements. I like the dark painted beadboard under the island peeking out and tying to the dark countertops elsewhere. And making the wood stools stand out. JS: We really love this look- and the color of the cabinets and the island!!! We also love the hood!
SY: another view of the Whittney Parkinson kitchen that strikes me as having many of the elements you are inclined toward. I like the white walls but creamy cabinets, the dark hickory(ish) floors, the black accents and dark counter. What do you think? Anything here you like or dislike in particular? JS: Yes! Love love love! I like the colors, feel, flooring, hood, don’t love the butcher block part - we were thinking of stools with backs, but I like the color and feel & materials here.
SY: dark floors, dark counters, creamy cabinets. Also like the texture of the little bit of shiplap backsplash. JS:Love the bit of shiplap in the kitchen! Always thinking about that for the little 1/2 bath too - that and the wallpaper with birds you’ve put on your FB page. :)
SY: just looking at countertops - this is a negresco leather granite, which I saw last week at a stone yard in Indpls. Your thoughts? JS: Every time I like a countertop at a showroom it’s this leather granite style so yes - on point! ?
SY: negresco leather granite slab example. I saw lots with more movement, but it seems you prefer more solid, yes? JS: I do - but Jim is open to other options. ???
SY: I think a medium-dark hickory floor might be wonderful for you. A bit more rustic than oak. JS: we both love this floor _ it is terrific!
SY: for dog bowls (presuming that at least water must stay out all the time) you could do this in the cabinet by the powder room, or the north end of your island (and still get 4 stools). JS: both great ideas! The dogs water is out all the time and Bodie’s food is out all the time _ Celine eats when offered.
Cute! LN: love dog nooks!
SY: end of island situation for dog bowls JS: neat!
SY: you can also do some sort of toe kick pull out, but of course that doesn't sit out accessible 24/7. JS: I guess that’s the downside by their water at least needs to be out all the time.
the arch softens things a bit... maybe a drawer and an arch to keep this a bit more useful. JS I really like this one the best by its dual purpose and their water could be there all the time and I can still put books there. They could share a water bowl and then each have a food bowl.
SY: nice arch above the kitchen sink, no? JS love this!!! So pretty!
SY: The vertical spice/oil situation below counter level by a stove strikes me as hard to access, personally, though I know you like it. I'd prefer something like this, a shelf behind the range for easy access oils etc, and/or an upper cabinet by the stove. Your thoughts? JS: have you seen where there is a shelf on either side of the cooktop but like not super visible by its inside the under the hood part? Then you can put slices and oil there - that is neat. Yeah I like the pull out spice rack too but am open to this as well - it’s 2000x better than what I have now!
SY: I know you like the drawers under the sink, but this would be more affordable. JS: this is very awesome too!
SY: there are loads of corner cabinet access solutions. Talk to your cabinet maker about your options. JS ok
SY: under counter microwave with divided drawer below. JS love this!!!
SY: totally just thought you'd appreciate this. :)
SY: coffee station in 18"d cabinets
SY: this idea along your northwest wall around the window - 18" deep max. This looks to be about that.
SY: full height closed mudroom cabinets with bench under window, but shallower than this
SY: mudroom cabinets / bench around window
SY: cabinets on the right are 18"d
SY: Jessica, are you guys ok with sink in island if it makes the layout work? I like to avoid that, but with all your openings, we may struggle to get cabinet runs long enough to keep all your appliances grouped in a tight triangle. Some questions: we are trying hard to get you a plan that works without moving any current openings (except closing off the door to the office from the kitchen). But, we may also show you an option that shifts a couple openings (within reason) if it reaches an ideal solution we cannot reach without shifting openings. To that end, just asking: can we move the garage door, just a few feet north along that wall, like to where the W/D sit now?
SY: Again, you pinned this as a layout you really like, and the primary sink is in the island. So I assume that is ok by you?
SY: again, sink in island here (your image) makes the triangle tight. That would be ok by you?
SY: Following up on countertops to be sure I understand what you like and dislike. Whether cool (gray/Jim) or warm (brown/Jessica), is it correct that you like DARK countertops rather than LIGHT? And solid, rather than speckled or grained (so you would NOT like this soapstone)? Correct?
