Home organization is always a top New Year’s resolution and many of us are now on a mission to declutter and set up systems to keep our homes in order. We’ve come up with five fabulous storage ideas to help you on your way. Not sure where to store files in your home office? Can’t find those back-of-cabinet jars in your kitchen? Read on to find out how you can turn your home into a clever, considered space that has a place for everything.
1. Utilize Your Island
Island units have become an integral part of kitchen designs, not only providing more counter space but also offering room for appliances, seating and storage. In fact, when it comes to storage, our 2021 Kitchen Trends Study reports that it’s one of the most important factors in a kitchen and that a whopping 98% of homeowners who add or upgrade an island include storage. The most popular choices are cabinets with doors and drawers.
“Islands make a great place for storage as they are usually in the center of the kitchen work zone,” says Steve Karp, senior designer of luxury kitchen company Bentwood of Chicago. “On the working side of the island there are many popular storage options, from deeper drawers with heavy glides, which can support pot and pan storage, to vertical storage in base cabinetry that’s convenient for storing baking sheets, racks and cutting boards.”
Tailoring storage systems to the items you have means you’ll have a spot for everything. “We often use the storage space on the seating side of the island for items used less often, such as appetizer plates, additional glassware and vases,” Karp says.

2. Mix Storage With Furniture
Creating an interior that feels smart and cohesive is easy when function and form blend together, so consider investing in multifunctional furniture that makes a statement. Here, a desk has been formed out of a larger storage piece, ensuring it becomes a stylish feature in its own right. Additionally, including cabinetry with lift-up TV storage, internal charging stations and internal lighting helps add modern conveniences to the furniture-inspired cabinetry of today.
Multifunctional options such as these are ideal if you’re looking to save space or have a more compact room. Use a combination of open display areas and hidden storage so that you can hide away your less attractive items while showing off those you’d like to.
Alternatively, find a way of working existing items into newer storage additions. “Integrating existing furniture into the design composition adds personality to a room,” Karp says. “For example, pushing an antique table up to a kitchen island not only gives additional seating but tells a special story. Adding a comfortable desk into a home office that includes newly built custom cabinetry is a lovely way of combining the new and old in a successful way.”

3. Unlock Your Creativity
Smart storage is often the result of creative thinking, but not always what you might associate with high style. Luckily, some furniture fitting designers are prioritizing storage systems that are not only practical but also sleek and stylish. The latest innovations allow you to get creative and choose among a variety of customizable features to find just what you need.
For example, customizing your drawer side profiles with a material that reflects your style, such as stone, contrasting wood or glass, means you can help it blend in with your decor or make a style statement of its own. “We offer steel drawers that come in different colors, with varying design profiles,” says Weylin Beavers of Hettich, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of furniture fittings. “Also, we currently have three distinct design ‘capes’ that give a certain look: wood, concrete and copper, and there’s also an inlay option so you can replace the sides with wood or glass.”
No need for clunky drawer sides either. The sleek, slimline materials can be as little as 10 millimeters thick, making the units small-space friendly and seriously stylish. “It’s a great option if you’re using drawers for a pantry pullout unit or where you have a bank of drawers behind doors,” Beavers says.

4. Embrace Glass
Design-conscious homeowners will know that putting time and effort into ensuring that every part of their kitchen is perfect means you reap the benefits further down the line. Looking at every element, right down to the smaller details of your storage, will leave you satisfied that every bit of your scheme is as beautiful as it is functional.
Here, for example, a minimalist kitchen has incorporated storage that complements its modern aesthetic with push-to-open drawers — which means no handles interrupting the glass — and glass side profiles so items can be easily found and viewed from all sides. This light, airy style also gives you the option to use glass only on the sides of your drawers, so contents will be hidden from sight from the front.
“Glass-sided cabinetry allows for a decorative element as well as quick access,” Karp says. “Glass side profiles on drawers make it easy to find spices, and smaller items that could get lost stacked in upper cabinetry. In addition, glass is nonporous and easy to clean.”

5. Go Slim and Wide
Storage doesn’t have to be tall and bulky — sometimes low and wide works better within a room and can prevent a space from feeling closed in. Low-profile furniture also works well when fitted under a window, so as not to block any light. Here, the low drawer unit beneath the master bath sinks keep the area above free for the basins and a large mirror, and the fact that it’s wall-mounted accentuates the feeling of space, as you can see more of the floor.
New fitting innovations provide sturdy support for the drawers too, so they’re guaranteed to stand the test of time — an important factor when you’re investing in the perfect cabinetry for your space. “With good storage you will have a more organized home and know where things are located,” Beavers says. “As a homeowner you want to know that your fittings will last for as long as you are in your home. Plus, in a busy household, the fittings get used quite frequently so they need to be able to stand wear and tear.”
