Kitchen
Rift-sawn white oak in a custom stain. “The refrigerator panels and cabinets and drawers on the right side of the kitchen were painted in Whisper White by Dunn-Edwards, which is the same paint color used on the ceiling,” Brophy says. “This really helped us to create an airy, open-feeling space.” Other special features. Quartzite countertops. White shiplap-style cabinets. White ceramic tile backsplash. “The large, split-level island is definitely the coolest feature,” Brophy says. “It includes an informal dining area for six people. This extra counter space is also great for entertaining, additional prep space when needed and so much more. It not only looks cool, but it’s also super functional.”
Aspen oak with vertical-grain, flat-panel fronts. “The wood cabinets warmed up the feel of the kitchen,” Sessions says. “It contrasts with the white-and-gray island countertop and backsplash.” Other special features. “Minimalistic hardware lets the cabinets stand out as the feature design element,” Sessions says. “Opaque glass cabinets create a contrast and break up the cabinet wall. Matching slab island waterfall edges and full-height slab backsplash connect the space together. Adding a couple of open shelves for some small decorations and plants adds personality to the space.”

In this kitchen by Julie Rootes Interiors, rift-sawn French oak cabinets, Taj Mahal quartzite countertops and a Calacatta marble backsplash form an elegant mix of natural materials.
I LIKE THIS IDEA: 3. Lighter Wood Lifts Off Wood never goes out of style, but the popularity of various tones is always in flux. Lately, many designers say super light wood tones are having their moment. “We’re noticing a return to lighter, warmer wood tones — away from the darker walnuts and mahoganies,” Erin Tracey of LDa Architecture & Interiors says. The light wood cabinets, floor and island detail in this kitchen by Savvy Interiors are a good example.
BLACK ON ONE SIDE - WHTIE ELSEWHERE Several home professionals noted an increase in interest for black as a kitchen cabinet color. “I feel like now homeowners are not afraid to experiment with color,” designer Svetlana Hanzyy says. “Bold black, green and blue are very popular.” Designer Jessica Curry of Interiors by J. Curry is also seeing a lot of requests for black cabinetry, especially paired with brushed gold hardware and fixtures, as seen in this kitchen by JDS Construction.
2. Dark Jewel Tones Jump Out No one is saying white is going anywhere anytime soon, especially when it comes to kitchen cabinet color, but many design and building professionals report an uptick in requests from clients for something much darker, especially dark jewel tones. “Whites are always popular, but lately I have had several clients who have requested dark and moody colors,” designer John McClain says. “I also tend to lead my clients into this direction because I feel that that is the new direction for color palettes for interior design. These dark and sexy colors tend to envelop the room and make every space feel very cozy. I am seeing these darker colors on everything from wallpaper to furniture and in simple areas such as paint on the walls, and I fully embrace it.” McClain used emerald green handmade tile set in a herringbone pattern for this Los Angeles powder room.
Keep an eye out for mushroom, a brown or beige color with gray in it. General contractor Brad Leavitt of AFT Construction has used the color in two projects recently, including for the kitchen cabinets shown here.
. Browns Bounce Back The trend that came up the most among designers and builders was the resurgence of shades of brown. “Brown seems to be making a comeback,” says designer Raychel Wade, who used terra-cotta wallpaper in the home office shown here. But there’s a lot of variation in the color of brown and its uses throughout a home. Taupes, beiges, sands — basically any earth tone seems to be gaining popularity. “I believe that there’s a trend back toward browns and beiges,” designer Kelly Nelson says. “Lord knows people still love gray, but I think there’s been a shift toward grays with brown undertones — greiges, if you will — that don’t feel sterile or industrial and which work well with both grays and browns. I, for one, am happy to welcome the browns back.”
8. High Drama The stark black-and-white color palette in this Palm Springs, California, kitchen by J. Kurtz Design establishes instant drama. Other standout details include off-white zellige tiles that go all the way to the ceiling, and a custom white plastered range hood with a wood detail.
Glass mosaic. A wonderful option with concrete countertops is that you can incorporate and expose glints of recycled glass in it. Using glass backsplash tiles accentuates these glinting details. Learn more about incorporating unique accent pieces in concrete countertops
white cabinet - gray backsplash and countertops Stainless steel. Sleek and reflective, stainless steel gives a kitchen with concrete countertops a gleaming industrial look. Think shiny new commercial kitchen or a dash of food-laboratory style.
GRAYISH CONOUNTEROP - colored cabinets. More concrete. Extending the concrete of the countertop to the backsplash creates a simple, seamless look. In this farmhouse-style kitchen, the concrete is a modern update on soapstone (we’ll get to soapstone in a future story in this series).
WTHIE CABINET WITH V DARK COUNTEROPS The great thing about recycled-paper countertops is that they’re doppelgangers for soapstone and honed granite, making them just as suitable for vintage-style kitchens as contemporary ones. This very vintage-looking kitchen actually went through a recent eco-friendly renovation. The backsplash is by Fireclay Tile.
Recycled-glass tiles. The combination of chocolate countertops and bright green tiles is a yummy one. These beautiful tiles from Sandhill Industries are composed of 100% recycled glass. Other eco-friendly materials in the room include floors made of recycled rubber and cork, green-certified cabinets by Crystal and zero-VOC paints. Want a Clear Decorating Conscious? black tile backsplish - herringbone
Backsplash. Near-black porcelain tile (Paradise Arrow in Negro by Porcelanosa) in a herringbone pattern with dark grout. “There are natural variances in the stones,” Schmidt says. “We choose black outlet and switch plate covers so as not to distract from the counter-to-ceiling backsplash. A dark countertop [Charcoal Soapstone in Eternal color with a suede finish by Silestone] and black sink [Grandis by Blanco] give the dark tile choice a stronger impact. By increasing the amount of natural light coming into the space from all directions, we could choose a dark backsplash and countertop without making the kitchen feel dim.”
The kitchen has a mix of covered and open shelving. Upper cabinets with doors provide valuable storage, while open wood shelves can be used to showcase favorite china. For the backsplash, the design team used locally produced tile from Fireclay Tile. “The kitchen tile has an elegant pattern with very subtle color variations to give it depth,” says Carrie Shores Diller, principal architect and cofounder of Inspired ADUs.
