Another option is to choose a time-tested signature color of one of your favorite designers. While a color shown in a single photo may look different in real life, if you try a designer’s go-to hue, you can rest assured that this color looks great in many spaces. For example, I have used Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray in a multitude of projects, because it’s sumptuous but subtle, and it always just works.
Go big and go home. Another huge factor that can change how you perceive a paint color is the size of the swatch. No matter how carefully you look at it, a tiny paint store swatch will never fully show you what a color will look like on a full wall. For this reason, designers will often apply a “paint strike,” a large stroke of paint, directly to the wall to see how it will look in real life.
As mentioned, it can also help to use another design element of the room as color inspiration. This wall treatment, for example, draws colors from the traditional rug. However, it’s usually recommended to choose colors that are a bit lighter or toned down from the true hues in the inspiration piece, lest they be too saturated for a full wall.
Pay attention to existing finishes. If you are seeking paint colors for your kitchen, bath or another room with existing finishes to consider, start there. For example, cool gray tile floors or granite counters beg for a cool wall hue like blue or gray. Bring a sample or photo of the finishes in your room to the paint store to aid in matching.

Gray Shaker-style cabinets (painted in Pussywillow by Sherwin-Williams) and marble-look quartz countertops and backsplash gave the kitchen a fresh, transitional style.
9. Quartzite. As granite continues to decline in popularity, according to recent Houzz research, quartzite seems to be rising. The natural stone is harder than granite and displays infinite variation, meaning no two slabs ever look the same. It’s also super heat-resistant and more scratch-resistant than engineered quartz. This kitchen, which was the most popular one uploaded in 2019, features a dramatic Florida quartzite island countertop.
