My Bathroom Plan (1)
Black walls n office Dark walls create moody drama in a cozy office-sitting room off the entry. “There was so much white in this house, we needed to add some black for depth,” Chandler says. They used Benjamin Moore’s Cheating Heart paint on the walls and ceiling. They added texture and depth to the fireplace wall by covering it in shiplap.
Mix styles. White cabinets look best when they play off opposing elements. In this kitchen, the simple white cabinets look more interesting when juxtaposed with a sparkling glass backsplash. It’s truly a case of yin and yang. Both features share a common hue, but their styles couldn’t be more different. Still, the traditional cabinets are in harmony with the glitzy, contemporary tile. Paint pick: For a similar cabinet color, try Ultra White by Valspar.
Why this white kitchen works: Three Benjamin Moore whites come together in this Texas kitchen. It has Titanium on the walls, Chantilly Lace on the ceiling, and Simply White on the trim and cabinets. The slightly different shades on each surface give the room dimension and add visual interest where the trio of paints meet, such as above the sink and doorways.
1. Layer Shades of White Avoid a sterile look by mixing whites. If you use just one shade, the room can end up looking flat. Instead, choose three or four shades of white and place them on different materials around the kitchen. This will add dimension and interest throughout the space. While you are bringing in different shades of white, avoid mixing warm whites with cool whites. Warm tones look more yellow, and cool tones look more blue. Most paint retailers will present their warm whites and cool whites separately, which will help you find whites in the same group. My go-to warm whites are White Flour by Sherwin-Williams, White Dove by Benjamin Moore and Nude by Behr. For cool whites, I recommend White Diamond by Benjamin Moore, Designer White by Pratt & Lambert and Delicate White by PPG Pittsburgh Paints.
Budget-Friendly Takeaways Check out digitally printed porcelain tile with the look of natural stone. Keep the toilet in the same place to avoid having to move the stack. If thermal controls within reach from outside the shower aren’t within the budget, choose a shower head that can be diverted to a handheld wand. If a solid wood vanity is beyond your budget, check out the latest in laminate products. Water-saving plumbing fixtures and LED lights will save money on utility bills for years to come. Get creative with artwork. You can use ready-made frames for prints found online, children’s artwork, favorite postcards or plates from a vintage book of botanical prints.
The vanity and sconce styles lean more traditional, while the undermount sinks and streamlined faucets are contemporary. These combinations strike a transitional balance. The countertops are quartz. “They have a rough river-washed finish that has a texture to it,” Wick says. The hard manmade material is very durable and has the look of natural stone.

lack and chrome were thought to reflect new technology, so the color combination was used often in art deco. This powder room displays all the glamour of the period.
This is modern farmhouse style with an earthy-chic flair. Every material used in here is natural. And everything is set off beautifully by the vanilla-white walls.
Earthy chic can be more traditional, too. The neutral, earth-tone palette works beautifully with a few ornate pieces and a traditional layout.
