Like the natural wood shelving to left, in contrast to mostly white cabinets.
Consider this opening up solution: the peninsula includes the wall width but otherwise is completely in the dining room, making that room 2' narrower. I could do a foot less than that, or keep the counter where it is and add a higher strip (like Jo used to have) to hide the countered and for sitting at with a stool.
Notice how quarter-round shelves are used to ease uppers into a windowed corner.
