How to Put a Glamorous Stamp on Your Bathroom
A design expert shares ways to add timeless sophistication to your bathing space

Perhaps you long for a bathroom that glimmers with the layered mirrors and geometric motifs of Art Deco style. Or maybe you dream of a sleek, streamlined space with stainless faucets and modern fixtures. Whatever your chosen aesthetic, having classic underpinnings in place ensures a high-level look that will last. “Today’s bathrooms are sanctuaries, places where we retreat to recharge and regenerate,” says Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, vice president of design at DXV. “Solid, sophisticated design classics will have a far longer-lasting impact than the latest flashy trends.”
1. Start With an Elegant Palette
Your bathroom hues inform the overall mood. Choose earthy colors such as warm browns, grays and greens to create an environment that is “soothing and relaxing, and helps you reconnect with nature,” L’Henaff says. Wallpaper with pattern and tile with texture give a room warmth, as do gleaming wood floors, as seen here.
Other refined palettes include white-on-white or muted, neutral colors, both of which “can bring subtle sophistication to the space,” L’Henaff says, especially when paired with matte black fittings. Combine deep, saturated colors such as blacks, purples and blues with brass accents for a dramatic effect, he adds.

2. Find a Focal Point
Anchor your bathroom with one oversize statement piece to draw the eye in. “Think about the drama you wish to create as you enter and as you move around that space,” L’Henaff says. “A freestanding soaking tub easily creates a focal point in the room due to its presence. A vanity or elaborate shower can also claim all the attention.”
Place the tub in a special area to further draw attention to its lines and stunning style. Put it under a window or in an alcove, or hang a chandelier overhead. Add a floor-mount tub filler that holds its own with sculptural interest and thoughtful detailing to make your bathroom feel even more special.

3. Enhance With Classic Materials
Traditional options such as stone, large tiles and mosaics lend tactility to surfaces and “can bring a very rich feeling to a small space in a bathroom,” L’Henaff says. Try stone tile in different sizes to make a space more dynamic. Subway tile is a tried-and-true look on walls, while smaller hexagons and squares work well on the floor. Slabs are best for countertops.
Use neutral hues for a serene feel, or mix a little chocolate or taupe with whites and grays to highlight changes in tile shape. Also, consider contrasting honed and polished stone on different surfaces for visual interest. White porcelain fittings, such as a long, lean toilet and bidet, as seen here, are a clean counterpoint.

4. Put a Modern Spin on Traditional Design
Opt for time-honored pieces such as console sinks, as seen here, and old-world architectural details such as molding, etching and trim. They can help enhance the ageless appearance of a bathroom, L’Henaff says, and add a sparkle of yesteryear to the mix.
Freshen the look for today by paring pieces down to their fundamentals. “Playing with materials and textures, while using very clean-lined products and a simplicity of finishes, adds a modern element to the environment,” L’Henaff says. Choose products with slimmer silhouettes, sleeker legs and straighter edges. Add a backdrop of unadorned walls, large windows and lots of natural light for a feeling of airy openness.

5. Add Some Shine
Finish your bathroom with a final layer of accessories to infuse the space with sparkle. Think of your faucets and fittings as the jewelry in the room, and choose bright brass or polished stainless steel to create twinkle against neutral surfaces, such as with bright shower handles, as seen here, and a sleek bathtub bridge. Then coordinate your light fixtures with the finishes of the fittings, L’Henaff says. “They don’t need to match, but they do need to work together.”
Finally, install some mirrors for additional shimmer. “Don’t be afraid to go large,” L’Henaff says. “There’s nothing sadder than an undersized mirror in a bathroom!”
