Having ample storage hidden behind closed doors is essential to creating a master bath that feels peaceful and uncluttered. That said, it’s equally helpful to have a bit of space dedicated to items you want to be able to grab quickly and easily — and for that, open shelves are just the ticket. In this space from Rochelle Cote Interior Design, lower shelves hold fresh towels; wall shelves display decor; and everything else is tucked neatly away in drawers and behind cabinet doors.
If you’re remodeling your master bedroom as well as the bath, it’s important to think about flow between the two spaces. Would positioning a dressing area closer to the bathroom make getting ready more convenient? If so, you might want to look into a setup similar to the one seen here from ID.ology Interiors & Design, with a dresser-like island in the center and ample ceiling-height wardrobes along the wall.
A post-workout spa with calming Japanese-inspired style. While drawing up the plans, designer Meghan Browne found there was just enough space next to the vanity for a Japanese-style soaking tub. These tubs are shorter and deeper than standard tubs — the idea is to be able to sit in water up to your neck.
A rainbow of glass mosaic tile makes for a distinct accent wall in this Rhode Island bathroom. Designer Boyd A. Rourke of Brinc Design says his client wanted to create a European feel with an aquatic twist, reminiscent of time spend in the Greek islands. The vertical tiling, floating vanities and blue ceiling complete the breezy look.
Dark grout in a similar tone to a dark tile will create a softer look, while a light grout will bring out the tile pattern, adding even more drama. If you like black tile but want to soften the look, choose a charcoal shade for the tile and match it closely, rather than choosing a pure black and trying to soften it with white.

Dramatic Ceiling -- If you can’t find the right spot to add drama, try looking up. A single roll of wallpaper is often enough to make over a bathroom ceiling, and since bathrooms are often taller than they are wide, adding a little interest overhead will only help make the room feel intimate and more well-proportioned.
This London powder room is a homage to the beauty of marble. This lovely space, designed by rixon architecture, features gorgeous marble from floor to ceiling.
Wallpaper with brass keys hidden in the leaves.
Black-framed shower doors made of aluminum or steel look stunning in industrial spaces. Repeat the black frame color with matte black shower fittings and cabinet hardware for a cohesive look.
Note how the glass wall does not need to extend a long distance.
Like the flow, the tile and the floating vanity.
Dramatic feel of the shower tile - black limestone in this case.
Like the was the tiles go up/down, and I like the color.
Tile in contemporary bathrooms can run the gamut from neutral to boldly colorful — but wherever your taste lies on the color spectrum, tile is a wonderful way to customize your bathroom design.
I like the handles for the drawers and cabinets. I think the drawers are too deep. Better to have three or four drawers that are shallower.
I like the bathtub as a focal point. I do no like the glass shower wall and door.
I like the walls.
I generally like this bathroom, especially the floating vanity and the floor.
I like both the tub and the floor.
I like the wood tone, and I like the shelving in the tub area. I do not like the wide ledge to get into the tub. Prefer a standalone tub. I do not like the window coming this low to the tub.
I like the window above the mirror and sinks, but it is a little boring. Thought to make it more interesting is to have a series of window squares separated by a four inch piece of wood.
Love the light, and like the gray tone.
Like the teak flooring. This renovated bathroom is in a Joseph Eichler-built home in Marin Country, California. The shower has a slatted stained teak deck floor, dual shower heads and a glass door that leads outside.
Details for a small bathroom.
The start of an idea.
An idea.
Idea for a bathroom shared by two bedrooms.
Whites and grays played a major role in brightening the bathroom, while playing with pattern, texture and finishes kept it from looking too sterile. An idea.
I like the light around the mirror and the floating vanity.
I like the faucets and spigot in the wall.
Like the marble tile on the wall. Like the distance between the tub and the main shower. Like the niches. Consider two shower heads even though I personally only need one. Not sure why the tub has a glass side also.
Like the niches. Like the tub.
I kinda like the black marble approach, but this bathroom is too dark. In a bathroom with a lot of light, it would work.
I like the encaustice tiles.
Like the wood, the idea of drawers and the floating shelf at the bottom. I hate the round mirrors and the sinks.
Love the spaciousness of this shower and the open door to nature.
Simplicity and beauty of the vanity, except that I do not like the modern sinks.
I like the look of the wood and the white tub and sink counters.
Spa look, peaceful. Love the rock tub and its color. Not sure I like the color of the stone walls.
I like the stained wood bases, the clearance over the floor, and for one of the few times, the separate counters. That said, the bases are boring and need some personality.
Hate the sinks, but I like the clean lines of the counter and how it floats in space. Like the gray color of the tile. Do not like towel racks under the sinks - too close to the floor. Not crazy about glass walls for shower.
I like the dark floor and wall. Separation between shower and sinks need to be higher. Hate the modern sinks. Window is way too large - no privacy.
Like the counter and shelf underneath. Clean look. Do NOT like the sinks.
Like the wall in shower with no door and no glass wall. Like the tub setup somewhat.
Like tub as a focal point, but it needs to have a spa feel. This has the shower at the left just like my master bathroom. Consider redoing the windows in my bathroom so that they pop like this.
?
Like the wood tones.
Generally like the layout. Do not like the color of the stone floors or wall. Want the tub on the floor, not up some steps.
I like the stone walls. I would prefer larger stone tiles on the floor. Prefer a 55 inch high wall on the side.
Roomy, maybe peaceful, but do not like the beige color scheme.
