Deck Ideas
Thank you! We custom designed the railing for the house. It was made out of powder coated tube steel (rectangular, hollow, steel bars approximately 1"x2") inset into clear cedar wood posts (4x4s). The wood posts were then stained to match the horizontal wood siding. The powder coating (which is a type of baked on metal finish) matched all the other powder coated metal on the house, such as the custom designed planter boxes and soffit screen. Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

There is square lattice on top of the fence. The railing on the deck is a cable railing by San Diego Cable Railings.
It is hard to say whose cable railing system this is without a closeup, but VistaView offers very similar components.

Here is an alternative to cable rails that is perhaps not as mid-century but more Miami-modern. The company is green oxen. I used the green oxen railing also and was very happy with the results. The feel is much higher end than just cables. The cables system is Feeney, the railing uprights were custom fabricated locally to work with the Feeney line. Feeney also offered complete railing system.

Used cedar lumber for frame and galvanized wire panels for inserts. These panels can be found at farm & ranch supply stores. They come in various sizes, for example 42" x 96" and they can be cut to your required size. They are held in place by cedar trim pieces. The top handrail is a 2x6 cedar piece, run through a table saw so the top is slightly slanted to roll off rainwater. The wire panels are sometimes called "cattle panels" or "hog panels." They come in different grid sizes. The grid I used was 4"x6"First we anchored the edges of the panels to the 2x4 cedar frame, then we trimmed with 2" x 2" cedar on both sides of the panel, all the way around.
Why can't we do a low railing? Just enough to block the chair from falling off the deck?
