Why Bricks Just Work!
It’s fair to say that bare brickwork has always carried a bit of a stigma for being cold and unwelcoming, thanks to its raw texture that can be rough and cool to touch. However, the tables are turning on bricks’ tainted reputation with a wealth of new designs showing off this material in a new warm and friendly light. Take this contemporary kitchen, for example. The intriguing combination of heavy-grained timber and black joinery with bright white bricks creates a rich mixture of warming textures. Plus, using exposed bricks for the splashback and surrounding walls not only adds natural pattern and interest, it also provides a robust surface that laughs in the face of bangs and scrapes.
Wipe marks away or simply leave for effect. Thanks to the textural surface of bricks, any wear and tear marks that can’t be wiped away will simply add to the natural imperfections that all brickwork brings, so you won’t have to make excuses for those fingerprints again.

Fabulous Feature Walls
Living spaces or TV rooms can be hard to decorate with pattern and colour when the big screen is the focus. And while you don’t want a bold wallpaper distracting from the main activity, namely movie night, the room will still benefit from a focal point other than the telly. That’s where bricks can play the perfect role in bringing an interesting edge to the space – especially in the eye-catching high-gloss design pictured – while still feeling like a supportive sidekick and not the main star. What’s more, by continuing the internal bricks into the exterior spaces, or in this case a brick planter box, the boundaries between inside and out are blurred, helping to achieve a sense of connection between inside and out.
Change up the focus with lighting. You can instantly change the drama of a brick wall by adding lights above, either in a bulk head or in the ceiling, that will cast mesmerising shadows. This way, a feature wall behind a TV can either fade into the background or step up into the limelight when the screen’s off.

Different Brick Layouts
So you’ve picked the finish of your brick and you’ve agreed on the colour, but now it’s the format conundrum – to stack or not to stack? This straight lay pattern can work well for elongating the height of a room, drawing the eye up the wall, while the alternative is the common offset formation, which results in long, horizontal lines of bricks that help to widen a space.
Choose a contrasting or complementary mortar. While it’s important to choose the brick layout that will work best for your space, it’s also crucial to choose the correct mortar colour. Go for a contrasting mortar and the bricks’ linear pattern will jump out, while a more subtle tone that matches the brick will enable the wall to melt into the backdrop.

The Added Bonuses of Brick
Apart from the visual appeal of internal brick walls, there’s also the added benefit of their durability. Forget having to redecorate every few years, bricks don’t need paint or other treatments to maintain their aesthetics and they are relatively maintenance free, making them a highly cost-effective option. What’s more, when combined with a clever solar passive design, clay bricks can help moderate building temperatures and reduce energy consumption, helping you scrape back even more.
A great sound-proofer. Then there’s the benefit of brick walls being an excellent sound insulator due to their mass, which is particularly helpful with low frequency noise. So, if you’ve just wired in that high-spec sound system throughout your home, smart brick walls could be the difference between happy or harassed neighbours.

I was thrilled when my clients asked me to incorporate some brick features into their renovation project. The use of a double sided fire place created a centre point for the internal & external living areas adding texture & warmth.
