6. Stadium seating. Just like a movie theater with stadium seating, adding a bar counter and bar stools behind a sofa or sectional allows those farther from the screen a clear view from their elevated perch. This basement also features a custom reclaimed wall unit for the flat-screen TV that cleverly hides all wires and electronics in the cabinets underneath.
The basement also contains a home theater, so McKay played off a movie concession stand for the bar. She used copper throughout, including on the bar-height counter on the curved portion of the bar (the rest of it is at counter height). To the right a custom display case emulates a movie theater snack bar.The timbers are load bearing and were added during the design and building process to support a stone surround for the range in the kitchen above. The bar design doesn’t miss a beat and incorporates the timbers into a beautifully curved knee wall made of barn wood. The stunning staircase fills a stone turret that goes to the top of the house.
A large wine cellar was a big-ticket item on the couple's wish list. The room holds 1,000 bottles in a variety of racks that break up the space with vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. Glass doors offer a view of the wine cellar from the main living area. Thomas chose black walnut wood accents and stone to harmonize with the landscape and complement the materials in the rest of the basement. "The patio floor was used in the wine cellar to set the continuity of the interior and exterior finishes," Thomas says.
Robin custom designed the wine cooler in a spot formerly occupied by a closet. She specified using stainless steel commercial paint on the inside, LED lights that illuminate without heating the wine, horizontal shelves to make label reading easy and tempered glass.
“Sometimes as a designer, you just have to work around something,” Robin says. In the main living space in the basement, it was Steven’s shuffleboard table; along with the fireplace, that dictated some of the furniture layout. “We wanted this to be a gathering space, and one of the easiest games to play while enjoying a few drinks is throwing a puck down a table,” she says. The root-ball coffee table is something the family has been toting around for years and that brings something older to the mix of newer items. The walk-out basement provides direct access out to a poolside terrace, so guests can enjoy the easy flow between indoors and out.
The couple had owned the custom pool table for years, and its copper and stainless steel accents inspired the room's warm color palette. A built-in rack stores all of the pool table equipment. The room has some relaxing spots for spectators, including two cushy armchairs, a bench and a pub table. There's a very nice flow from room to room throughout the basement; that large doorway to the right of the window leads to the media room.Armchairs, rug: Global Views; cut-velvet throw pillows: Crate & Barrel; wall paint: Galveston Gray, Benjamin Moore; trim paint: White Dove, Benjamin Moore. (This paint combination was used in the billiards room, media room and hallway.)
Though they have a traditional-style house, the homeowners lean toward contemporary. So Jorgensen added accents like dark moldings to the coffered ceiling to accentuate its strongly modern grid pattern.
A new gas fireplace warms the room. Pizzale crafted the light fixture from three single Hinkley Lighting pendants hung at various heights. A wet bar includes a sink and wine cooler. Grass cloth adds more warm texture, while the Cambria quartz’s chiseled edge brings in another rustic touch.
Without room for nightstands, Lord designed the bed to have a shelf behind the top of the headboard for reading lamps, books and glasses. "I designed a heavily tufted headboard to balance out the sleekness of the room," Lord says. Throw pillows: West Elm
AFTER: Two built-in wardrobes on either side of the headboard take the place of the closet. Drawers underneath the platform bed provide plenty of storage for linens. Now there is also enough room to walk around the bed.As it turned out, the former guest room was also illegal due to egress issues. Lord added a step disguised as a shelf beneath the window to bring it up to code, then added floating shelves to help camouflage it.
Behind the sofa a bar creates a surface for eating or doing work. Its four walnut columns are so beautiful that Taylor did not want to cover them up. So instead of stone or wood, she used glass for the countertop. “The glass and the slight reveal let the walnut stand out,” she says.
