Think about how it will feel. A slab feels nicer to sit on than smaller tile, and a curved edge will feel great on the back of the legs. Sitting on a shower bench with no eased edge can be hard on the backs of your legs. Plan to use a slab or a tile that offers up a bullnose or a radius edge for your shower bench.
Using a large-format tile is great for barrier-free design and aging in place. But is that tile safe? Smaller tiles offer more grout lines and slip resistance, so if you're searching for a large tile, look for one with a good slip-resistance rating. A tile with an A or B rating is far safer than a tile with a C slip-resistance rating. A little-known fact is that if you're using glass tile or any sheet mosaic tile, it is up to the manufacturer or retailer to inform you if the tile is acceptable for submersion or pool use. Your shower floor should be built like it will be submerged. It is also the responsibility of the manufacturer of glass tile to specify the type of setting materials you need.
see how the tile in the corners is cut at a 45-degree angle. This creates a picture-frame effect and allows the water that lands on the edges of this tub deck to drain back to the tub. This is an excellent example of smart planning. Knowing this is required will help you pick tiles that look good when they're mitered.
Higher C.O.F. numbers indicate that a floor will be less slippery.
What's called a porcelain tile isn't really made from porcelain, but it is in that final category, impervious. A tile has to absorb less than 0.5% in order to be called porcelain. A lot of times, that label porcelain carries a price premium and if you can save some money by buying a vitreous tile (0.5% to 3% water absorption) you'll be being a smart consumer.
Tiles rated PEI III offer moderate resistance to wear and they are appropriate for most residential uses. Tiles that carry a PEI IV are highly resistant to wear and appropriate for all residential and some light commercial uses. Tile rated PEI V are the most resistant and are appropriate for use in heavy commercial locations. If you can save money with a PEI III or PEI IV tile, go for it. Anything rated higher than that is overkill for residential uses.
Grade. The first category is a tile's grade. A tile will have a grade from one to three. Grade one is the highest quality, grade two is similar to grade one but it will almost always be less expensive. Grades one and two are suitable for floors. Grade three tile aren't heavy-duty enough to walk on, and they're only intended to be used on walls. Though you can use floor tile as wall tile, you cannot use wall tile as floor tile. Be sure that any tile you're considering for your floors is at least a grade two.
