Traditional update
My clients wished to replace their 70’s laminate kitchen with a more luxurious style that would still be a comfortable and functional space. They preferred dimensional details, wanted to avoid a heavy appearance and improve access to storage.
We relocated the ovens, moved the microwave from over the cook top and converted the cook top to gas with proper ventilation. I suggested we eliminate the closet pantry and replace it with more flexible cabinetry. The low kitchen ceiling with fluorescent lights was removed and new recessed, hanging and under cabinet lighting was added. A matching built-in desk serves as both display and work area. The floor around the new island was banded in Brazilian cherry to contrast the existing white oak.
We chose two related door styles, similar in line but with different panels. The perimeter finish is a medium cherry with a square-cut raised panel and beading. The island and desk use a more traditional scooped raised panel with a roping detail and a distressed custom paint glaze finish.
The wife is a serious baker so we included two elements to assist her preparation. The island counter has an electric heat pad below the granite. This warms the stone enough to maintain an even temperature while working the dough. A warming drawer below the ovens is also used for this process.
Dish storage (a pegboard style system) is in 2 large island drawers across from the dishwasher. We also included cloth lined silverware storage in the island.
The combination of glass cabinet doors and sides and varied cabinet heights creates a very dimensional space. The gold toned glass tile back splash, with bronze inserts and the bold Juparana Persa granite add an element of sparkle and drama to complete this luxurious and functional kitchen.
