CHAPTER EIGHT: Defining 'The Look'
“The Look”:
• You’ve just re-carpeted your family room. The major pieces of furniture have now come back into the room. We can see the corners, we can see the baseboard. We now enjoy the view through the windows because we’re not distracted by our previous decorations… and then the rest of the junk comes back in!
• You’ve just painted the walls and ceiling of your family room. The major pieces of furniture have now come back into the room. You’ve placed the sofa in a new position, and removed the 20-year-old recliner and other dated/worn furnishings. There’s one good piece of art over the mantelpiece and the walls are pristine. We can see the corners of the room, and the freshly painted baseboards. We now enjoy the view through the windows because we’re not distracted by our previous decorations (the old curtains haven’t been put back yet)….and then the rest of the junk comes back in!
• You’ve opened the front door to your brand new home. The movers bring in the major pieces of furniture. Its’ exactly how you imagined it! We can see the corners, we can see the baseboards, and we can see the beautiful hardwood/granite/marble/carpeted floors! We now enjoy the view through the windows because the previous owners have removed their valances and swags! Our furniture looks terrific in this new setting……… and then the rest of the junk comes in!

• NOT Christmas Day (see page 76)
• NOT Thanksgiving
• NOT any major holiday (patriotic , religious, birthdays or anniversaries…)
• NOT a photographic display of every vacation, family event, and pet that has ever entered the house
