The goal of this renovation was to create a stair with a minimal footprint in order to maximize the usable space in this small apartment. The existing living room was divided in two and contained a steep ladder to access the second floor sleeping loft. The client wanted to create a single living space with a true staircase and to open up and preferably expand the old galley kitchen without taking away too much space from the living area. Our solution was to create a new stair that integrated with the kitchen cabinetry and dining area In order to not use up valuable floor area. The fourth tread of the stair continues to create a counter above additional kitchen storage and then cantilevers and wraps around the kitchen’s stone counters to create a dining area. The stair was custom fabricated in two parts. First a steel structure was created, this was then clad by a wood worker who constructed the kitchen cabinetry and made sure the stair integrated seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. The treads have a floating appearance when looking from the living room, that along with the open rail helps to visually connect the kitchen to the rest of the space. The angle of the dining area table is informed by the existing angled wall at the entry hall, the line of the table is picked up on the other side of the kitchen by new floor to ceiling cabinetry that folds around the rear wall of the kitchen into the hallway creating additional storage within the hall.

HomeClickThis amazing small kitchen design is due in large part to the turquoise cabinetry by Schrock. The candelabra lantern pendants could not have been a better choice in island lighting, while the chrome bridge Victorian faucet and cup drawer pulls are accentuated by the white quartz countertops. For a kitchen that is on the smaller side, it most certainly packs a punch!

Even better, she said it would involve no demolition, permits, or having to stay elsewhere while my kitchen was in ruins. “You might look at a less-than-beautiful kitchen and think ripping out cabinets or tearing up floors is the only solution,” says Megan. “But I wanted to show how truly transforming a total wash of paint color can be. Dana King Design Build RemodelingA 50 year old kitchen gets a makeover! This family hung on to their 1960s kitchen as long as they could because they loved the range, particularly the height of the cooktop and oven. The lower cooktop makes it easy to see contents in your pots and the oven height was perfect for the homeowner. We duplicated the function by placing the new cooktop and new oven at the same height as the 1960s range oven. This small kitchen was all about function and space saving from the built-in banquette seating with cantelivered table for maximum leg room to the dishwasher drawer that allows for more storage. Beyond function, it was made beautiful to showcase the homeowner's cobalt blue glass collection.

“A family home to be lived in not just looked at” placed functionality as main priority in the
extensive renovation of this coastal holiday home.
Existing layout featured:
– Inadequate bench space in the cooking zone
– An impractical and overly large walk in pantry
– Torturous angles in the design of the house made work zones cramped with a frenetic aesthetic at odds
with the linear skylights creating disharmony and an unbalanced feel to the entire space.
– Unappealing seating zones, not utilising the amazing view or north face space
WISH LIST
– Comfortable retreat for two people and extend family, with space for multiple cooks to work in the kitchen together or to a functional work zone for a couple.
DESIGN SOLUTION
– Removal of awkward angle walls creating more space for a larger kitchen
– External angles which couldn’t be modified are hidden, creating a rational, serene space where the skylights run parallel to walls and fittings.
NEW KITCHEN FEATURES
– A highly functional layout with well-defined and spacious cooking, preparing and storage zones.
– Generous bench space around cooktop and sink provide great workability in a small space
– An inviting island bench for relaxing, working and entertaining for one or many cooks
– A light filled interior with ocean views from several vantage points in the kitchen

keep the kitchen streamlined and easy to keep tidy.

The ink blue kitchen cabinets, marble effect worktops and oak floors give a coastal feel to the open plan living area. Fully fitted with a range of base units, integrated appliances and open shelving, this truly is a home from home.
Kristen Elizabeth DesignA cute mission style home in downtown Sacramento is home to a couple whose style runs a little more eclectic. We elevated the cabinets to the fullest height of the wall and topped with textured painted mesh lit uppers. We kept the original soapstone counters and redesigned the lower base cabinets for more functionality and a modern aesthetic. All painted surfaces including the wood floors are Farrow and Ball.
