Alair Homes PlanoOur clients came to us wanting to maximize the space they had. They were not planning on moving anytime soon, as they loved their neighborhood. They wanted to renovate the front of their house, which included the front atrium, living room, kitchen, and powder bath. They hated their kitchen because it was completely closed off, had low ceilings, was dark and outdated, not to mention the floors were different in each of these rooms! The pantry was in the breakfast area and the kitchen table became a junk catcher, being the first thing you see when coming in from the garage/laundry room. In their living room, they wanted the spaces on either side of the fireplace to be symmetrical, whether that be bookshelves, a wet bar or closed off. Both parents are working professionals with no time and/or desire to design, create and figure this out on their own. They needed help figuring out how to reconfigure their current space in order to maximize what they already had, as they could not see an obvious solution. They could not envision how it would look so the fact that our designers were able to show them their new kitchen in 3D was pertinent.
We removed the pass-through windows that surrounded the atrium and front dining room, as well as the entire kitchen wall, completely opening up those two rooms. We removed a hall that used to lead between the kitchen and the living room since it was a complete waste of space! The ceilings were raised to 10’ in the kitchen and we were able to leave the skylight, letting in that natural light they wanted. We were able to give them a much larger pantry with tons of shelving and increase the size of their laundry room by utilizing the space of their old breakfast nook.
We relocated the door to the garage into their new elongated laundry room, built a wet bar across from their new larger pantry (with a pocket door) and the flow and functionality of these new spaces is just perfect! All new Waypoint cabinets were installed one two main kitchen surrounding walls painted Linen. Calacatta Bianco Polished Porcelain Tile 4x12 was used for the backsplash. A large eat-at island was installed, painted Stone, where the family can now gather for homework, meals, and mingling. The soft champagne bronze hardware and accent lighting really give this white and gray kitchen a soft classic look.
In the living room, we removed the built-in bookshelves to the left of the fireplace and closed off the wet-bar on the other side, giving them more space in their master suite. White Oak wood flooring, stained Putney, was installed throughout the entire new space, giving it the continuity they were looking for.
In the guest bathroom, Carrara white herringbone marble mosaic 12x12 tile was used on the shower floor and niche, while basic marble Bianco polished 12x24 porcelain tile was used on the walls. Luxart polished chrome traditional hardware gives this timeless bathroom the perfect shine.
Our clients are so happy with the new functionality and look of their space. It has definitely changed their lives in a way they could have never imagined!

Kitchens by Good GuysAt our Winter Sun project, the house was very Tuscan Old World, and our homeowners were wanting a change from all the dark colors.
We updated the kitchen, master bathroom and the powder room but kept existing travertine flooring.
In the kitchen, we have white painted cabinets on the perimeter, grey painted cabinets for the island with marble looking quartz and grey subway backsplash laid in a herringbone pattern. To add texture, we designed a drywall hood to really make a statement.

Design Connection, Inc.The homeowner of this new build came to us for help with the design of their new home. They wanted a more contemporary look than what they're used to.
The large island is a great gathering point with in the open concept of the dining/kitchen/living space. Using two different colors of quartz countertops added contrast that highlights the marble backsplash. The backsplash adds texture and richness to the space. Shaker style cabinets help modernize the space with the clean lines. Function was key to this kitchen working with utensil pullouts, spice racks, rollouts, hidden storage and a knife block.
Design Connection, Inc. Kansas City interior designer provided space planning, architectural drawings, barstools, tile, plumbing fixtures, countertops, cabinets and hardware, lighting, paint colors, coordination with the builder and project management to ensure that the high standards of Design Connection, Inc. were maintained.

Amazing SpacesThis project incorporated the main floor of the home. The existing kitchen was narrow and dated, and closed off from the rest of the common spaces. The client’s wish list included opening up the space to combine the dining room and kitchen, create a more functional entry foyer, and update the dark sunporch to be more inviting.
The concept resulted in swapping the kitchen and dining area, creating a perfect flow from the entry through to the sunporch.
The new kitchen features blue-gray cabinets with polished white countertops and a white island with a dramatic Cielo Quartzite countertop. The soffit above features stained shiplap, helping to create the boundary of the kitchen. Custom window treatments and rattan chairs make the space feel casual and sophisticated.

One of my favorite things to work on is older homes with a bit of history because I find it an interesting challenge to marry the historical architectural features of a home with modern design elements that work well for my client’s current lifestyle.
This home was particularly fun because it was the second kitchen we had done for this family and was quite a departure from the style of the first kitchen.
The before shot of the kitchen shows a view from the family room. See the dropped ceiling? We were curious, was this just part of the design or was the dropped ceiling there to hide mechanicals? Well we soon found out that it was mostly decorative (yay!), and with the exception of a little bit of work to some plumbing from an upstairs bathroom and rerouting of the ventilation system within the original floor joists, we were in the clear, phew! The shot of the completed kitchen from roughly the same vantage point shows how much taller the ceilings are. It makes a huge difference in the feel of the space. Dark and gloomy turned fresh and light!
Another serious consideration was what do we do with the skinny transom window above the refrigerator. After much back and forth, we decided to eliminate it and do some open shelving instead. This ended up being one of the nicest areas in the room. I am calling it the “fun zone” because it houses all the barware, wine cubbies and a bar fridge — the perfect little buffet spot for entertaining. It is flanked on either side by pull out pantries that I’m sure will get a ton of use. Since the neighboring room has literally three walls of almost full height windows, the kitchen gets plenty of light.
The gold shelving brackets, large pendant fixtures over the island and the tile mural behind the range all pay subtle homage to the home’s prairie style architecture and bring a bit of sparkle to the room.
Even though the room is quite large, the work triangle is very tight with the large Subzero fridge, sink and range all nearby for easy maneuvering during meal prep. There is seating for four at the island, and work aisles are generous.
