Spiering & Co LtdA tiny backyard in a modern development that is newly planted. There is a small rill running across the garden which is home to some goldfish, and which provides interest to the design. The perennial planting is the first to make a show and the shrubs and climbers will soon grow and provide a green backdrop to the perennial plants. There is room for outdoor dining and even for a garden shed.. The plants are bee friendly and the birds will enjoy the water feature using it as a bird bath.

Ian Moore DesignEach of the materials was chosen for a balance of richness and simplicity. The Kebony decking continues the rich color tone set by the oiled Cedar shingle and traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban siding on the rear facade of the house. The California Gold Slate for the rear yard patio adds additional texture and depth to the ground plane. The powder-coated metal railings enclose the deck and partition the dog run and bike parking area from the main rear yard. The eclectic plant mix blends California natives with other Mediterranean plants for a variety of color, texture and seasonality.

Groundworks IncThis existing outdoor space was transformed using a mix of new and re-purposed materials.
A Ne Trex deck makes better use of the space while keeping maintenance to a minimum. The dry- laidre- purposed blue- stone pavers provide good drainage to reduce standing water and mosquitoes in this urban back yard. The existing mature trees were combined with new plantings of ferns, perennials and vines to add dimension and texture to the outdoor area and soften the lines of the fence. The new seating area is perfect for BBQ'ing and dining al- fresco.
Greenwood Design Associates, LLCElfin thyme softens a stepping stone path. Penstemon 'Midnight' flowers purple in the foreground, hedge of Garrya elliptica 'Evie' (Coast Silktassel) provides a dark green backdrop along the fence. The end of season flowers are still hanging on the rosy buckwheat in the background, visible against the tall flowers spikes of Muhlenbergia rigens (Deer Grass.) On this steep slope the view from the upper deck shows the curves and circles in the new garden and the 180 degree city view. The terrace was recessed into the landscape on one side and extended onto a slope on the other side to maximize the space. The grid trellis holding the garden swing will soon have clematis vines reaching over the top. It will be painted to match the house siding. The stone steps leading down from the terrace lead to an urban orchard and vegetable garden

Antique rose has a new open grid trellis which matches the trellis suspending the garden swing nearby and coop. Paint to match the home's trim is coming soon. As the rose grows it will create a denser privacy screen between the porch and a close neighboring house.
Billy Goodnick Garden DesignJust to shake things up, Purple Wandering Jew (Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart') provides a strong contrast to the warm colors. A small redleaf Japanese Maple that was struggling in the back yard will eventually soften the view of the raised wood fence.
