Dorthy Pautz Landscape Architectthis small city back yard is designed for the adults to relax on the elevated bluestone terrace at the firepit and watch the kids play on the lawn. The yard used to be steeply sloped, so I created terracing to make the yard more usable. The yard highlights the existing antique San Francisco cobblestone wall that bounds the back of the yard. Wisteria is trained on the wood fence, and Green Tower Boxwoods on both sides of the yard create a framework. The edges are kept narrow and simple, to maximize the turf area and be tough enough to withstand the occasional soccer ball. The Fire pit is built around a ready-made contractor's kit from American Fyre Designs, to which I added reclaimed San Francisco Cobble around the outside. The Fire pit is bisected by the low retaining wall, and is low foot/table height on the patio side and a taller feature element on the lawn side which has a narrative with the old existing stone wall at the back.
BE Landscape DesignThis growing family needed to maximize their outdoor space. BE Landscape Design, elevated the Master BR deck, and fire-pit, designed a multi level BBQ for easy access to both lounge and dining areas. The retaining wall was removed and replaced with a nook for a built in dining bench. The large retaining wall was painted graphite grey, and faced with sturdy 'stallion wire' to support scented and flowering vines. The hillside was planted with native and shade tolerant plants.
The Yard StylistHere is another barbeque island installation in San Tan Valley. This installation uses the same “slab look” island material, but in this instance, the owners opted for a paler version of the slab colors. The rock tones here are cream, gray and white. You can see how, considering, the different barbeque styles and the addition of a sink, this island has a different look and feel. The colors compliment both the light-colored gravel and brick wall.

The flames subtly highlight marble tiles of the outdoor kitchen. It also provides warmth and a conversation piece for guests as the sun goes down.

The Yard StylistWe installed an outdoor kitchen and travertine pavers in this San Tan Ranch, AZ home. The outdoor kitchen is a perfect addition to the pool as it provides a close source of food preparation and seating. The travertine paver area is large enough to accommodate an outdoor table and chairs setting or a few recliners. The outdoor kitchen and the travertine pavers are a nice contrast from the pool’s dark brown tiled interior.
