Rustic cabin nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, NC. The cabin is a riff on the Appalachian culture and its architecture. Built as if it rose from the local woods, by local craftsmen with the tradition of seat-of-the-pants resourcefulness. The cabin echoes the Appalachian traditions of small is beautiful, and richness in simplicity.
Reclaimed Heart Pine flooring. Reclaimed barn wood wall panelling. Cypress wall panelling with nickel groove. Wormy Maple loft flooring. Exterior door hand crafted by local artisan. Ships ladder constructed from leftover rough-sawn Hemlock rafters.

The original objective was to design an efficient, mountain contemporary cabin with emphasis on light, layout and landscape. Each form delivers natural light to its respective space while contributing to the composition as a whole. Local granite flows in and out bringing the natural environment into the home. A detached pavilion and covered patios with opening wall doors provide living area for all seasons. The low pitch contemporary shed roof forms balance with the mountain gables and timber details. The contemporary roof forms bathe the rustic stone and wood material palate in sunlight creating a warm, inviting space. Photo by Matt Waclo.

Spanning the mountainside of Seven Springs, framed by nature’s beauty, sets a timeless mountain dwelling, where location is everything. Facing due east, the lot offers breathtaking valley and surrounding mountain views. From room to room, the design exploits the beautiful vistas. One’s eyes are immediately drawn from the 30’ wide entry across a freestanding spiral staircase, through 27’ tall windows where the outdoors once again meets. The great room, dinning room, and kitchen with 27’ vaulted ceilings comprise a third of the home’s square footage on the main level.
