Need help with kitchen

I'm looking to add some color and personality to the fairly traditional kitchen in my new home. I'm trying to bring some of the blues from the semi connected (tri-level style split between kitchen and living room) living room in to the kitchen. I'm thinking of using blue colored pendants over the island as well as possibly a blue/brown combination of glass tile for a backsplash. Does anyone have any recommendations of the glass tile and/or the pendants? Do you think the room needs a colored accent wall? Should I abandon trying to tie the two rooms together and go a different route all together?

I like the idea of trying to tie the rooms together through color. Architectural Ceramics could be a great resource for you. We have several glass tile patterns and colors to choose from. Jonas--Given that your cabinets are light oak, your idea of an accent wall can work. I like the idea of pendant fixtures over the island, and the glass tile backsplash. Check out my page, as there are a couple of kitchens that will give you some ideas, in terms of color and pendant fixtures, that are similar in scope to yours. I would go darker on the window wall, and lighter on the long wall of the kitchen and family room. The 45 degree wall would be easier to define the color if the cabinetry stopped there. I would consider some sort of lattice between the top of the end upper cabinet and the sloped ceiling, which would make the color break more logical visually. Happy Houzzing.

Hi Cristina, your table looks very beautiful however I discourage to have such furniture at home because of the mirrors. I work as a feng shui consultant and I know that the mirrors have some kind of power and one should be very carful placing them in the house. My personal opinion is to have a mirror in the place where the mirror can´t see you while you are resting or sleeping because in long term it can have negative influence on you. The mirror was created to look at it and it shouldn´t be used extensively also because of the reflections of the light. The human eye naturally is used to see the light coming from certain directions, if it comes from the direction which is not used to the light, especially artificial one, it may effect your vision or have negative influence on your mood. I'm talking about something very subtle which sometimes may be felt after some time. Another thing is that I always encourage people to don´t use repetitive patterns in the house just simple irregular forms and calm and worm colours which make the space more cozy and more natural. Gm everybody, My wife and me are trying to design our new kitchen, and we are a bit concern about its location in the house. This is a DIY project, so we are looking for opinions. As you can see in the picture, we are creating the kitchen room at the left bottom side and keeping a garden at the left upper. Our first idea was to locate the kitchen close to the living door (upper in the picture) but we would like to mantain the garden. Thanks in advance for any kind of help!! Rodri

Due to a leak I need to repaint my kitchen, and surrounding walls which leads eventually to my living room . I need HELP to find a color that compliments my CREAM Kitchen cabinets and the living room color which is BERKSHIRE BEIGE. Thanks to all of you! Secondly - would you suggest I remove the existing 4 inch laminate backsplash before installing the tile or should I just tile from the top of the existing backsplash to the bottom of the cabinets?

Ideally, I'd remove the 4" backsplash first, but only if you can do it without damaging the counter underneath. Otherwise your backsplash tile might not be wide enough to camouflage the lines left on the countertop.

It's definitely a cleaner look to remove the 4" backsplash before installing your tile. Removing it gives you more space to work with for your glass tile. Typically, without the 4" splash, you have 18" to work with from the top of the counter to the bottom of the upper cabinets. You'll also gain more space between the counter and the trim around the window. You can use a bigger tile under the window without the 4" splash, like a full 3x6 tile. Otherwise, keeping the splash may result in cut tile under the window. Or it limits you to a smaller mosaic to avoid cuts. Hope that helps!
