Should we hire an architect,general contractor, or interior designer for a house in need of interior remodeling?

    It greatly depends on your current knowledge as well as your knowledge/access to available contractors depending on the scope of the remodel. In general, if you are skilled and have the capacity to do the work, you do have the opportunity to save a few bucks. That being said, the opportunity cost may be high if you are trading an otherwise paid hour for the hours put into the house.


    As a general contractor, it is rare that we require assistance from an architect if the interior is to be remodeled. That being said, if you are planning on removing walls that are bearing, then either an architect or engineer would typically get involved in order to properly permit the project as well as calculate loads that may need to be transferred based on interior removal of walls.


    With a general contractor, you will have the expertise and experience that can save you time and money. Whether you have a loan on the project or are self funding it, again, there is an opportunity cost for using your own money or you are paying an interest to a lender. The faster you can complete the project, the better it is for you.


    In addition, an experienced general contractor can assist with design decisions to ensure the home is best suited for a resale market. The quality tends to be higher as well.


    With all of that said, if you have a experience in project management as well as some general construction knowledge, you can certainly tackle a fairly straight forward remodel.
