how do you manage sun/heat and insect control with these large openings? Investigating window film and Phantom screens for a similar configuration.

    Thank you for your inquiry. Screens kind of defeat the purpose of these types of doors. You may wish to speak with the manufacturers for screen options. This home is in Lake Tahoe facing east, with a dense conifer forest on 3 sides, so sun/heat is not a huge issue. This home does have a pocketed/hidden lutron solar shades that can be used for controlling heat gain to some extent. Other designs have the same, in addition to further consideration of overhangs and solar orientation. The glass in the doors can utilize the best possible energy performance (like LoE 366 glazing) for reducing solar impacts. Bug season is limited in our climate, and can vary due to time of day, wind, and other localized factors. Every homeowner should weigh all these considerations with their architect when deciding to install these doors or when to open them once installed.
