Shack from 1915 Gets a Facelift You Won't Believe!

Project Team - David Wilkes Builders

The challenge was to remodel an 854-square-foot shack, originally built in 1915, into what is now a sophisticated modern home located just blocks from downtown Austin, TX.

With its use of reclaimed materials and large picture windows that capture natural light, this stylish floor plan creates a warm, inviting home. The tranquil upstairs spaces feel like living in a treehouse. Residents can relax on the covered screened-in porch or unwind in privacy on the master porch.

Rear Exterior Before

Before the home was a 1,915 sq. ft. shack most would consider demolishing before taken on a remodel to preserve the history.

With an additional 3,246 sq. ft. and a second story balcony the home gained living space with downtown views!

The historical charm was preserved in the front exterior of the home which is in stark contrast to the elevated contemporary architecture from the back.
Kitchen Before

The existing kitchen lacked the contemporary features that every modern family enjoys today.

Kitchen After

A modern kitchen with reclaimed style. The shiplack wood was sourced and hand-picked to enhance the historical charm.
The dining room is tucked away yet remains connected to the surrounding living spaces.

Living Room Addition

Comfortable spaces have been added on every level, including this cozy living room.

The master bedroom includes its own porch.

This project also won the 2016 Best in American Living Gold award for Indoor or Outdoor Addition, $100K and over.

      Really breathtaking change! Everything on the inside is so gorgeous, I can barely believe whats there now came from the same footprint of the old 1915 home. Great job! Just curious how long did the remodel took?

      For those wondering how long the project took, it was completed in two phases. The first phase
      was 8 months and the second was 5 months. So, in total it was just over a
      year.
