So I bought this 1969 house that hasn't been updated since it was built and I'm looking for ideas to update the exterior.

After removing the bars on the windows, and replacing them with new low-e vinyl windows, I'm thinking of repainting the house charcoal gray with white trim.

Any suggestions on what to do with the hideous brick facade, and garage doors?

What about the front landscaping? It was dirt in January, but after severe rains SoCal has received, its 4 ft high weeds and mustard plants!

The stairs are concrete, just painted red. Can I do anything with those?

Also, any ideas for the fence are also appreciated. No other houses on the street have fences in front. This house didn't either until about 5 years ago, when the 100 year old owner's nephews moved in and started selling drugs out of it.

You can stain the bricks so they're more even toned. It's better for them than painting. Then paint the garage doors a darker color so they disappear. I'd also consider painting the red concrete steps a darker gray. Sorry, no suggestions for landscaping.

I agree with removing the fence/pillars to open up the yard and make it feel more inviting. If possible, cover the red steps with a natural stone or tile that blends with the tones of the stone on the house. Go to a local masonry or tile store and bring home samples that you can set next to the house and look at in different lights of the day. There are a lot of hard surfaces that I would remove and replace with softer native/low water use plants throughout and eliminate lawn altogether. Lastly, paint the garage doors to match the trim color of the house.

He de reconocer que soy de quitar paredes, todas si puedo, y que la vista alcance hasta el fondo y la luz entre hasta la puerta. En este caso tiraria todo salvo la pared de la cocina donde esta la puerta. La dejaria como un murete, una media pared, o cerrada totalmente dejandola abierta unicamente por los laterales. El comedor en la primera habitacion, que quedaría apartado de la entrada por un ropero en el recibidor, y el salon al fondo. Se puede colocar la mesa del ordenador. o un pequeño despacho, donde en el plano figura la mesa de comedor. Eso si... me gusta la cocina abierta, las tres estancias comunicadas, pero con la posibilidad de aislar espacios si quisiera. Me gusta la idea de cerrar la cocina por ambos lados con esos paneles de cristal que se pueden recoger a un lado gracias a unos rieles.

Buenos días Mamen, Tienes un patio muy grande para hacer todo lo que quieras, con todo ese espacio vemos muy fácil poner los tres espacios que estás pensando. Puedes delimitar la zona de comedor y de relax y todo lo que sobre utilizarlo como lugar para los niños (puedes incluir hasta un parque casero). Gm everybody, My wife and me are trying to design our new kitchen, and we are a bit concern about its location in the house. This is a DIY project, so we are looking for opinions. As you can see in the picture, we are creating the kitchen room at the left bottom side and keeping a garden at the left upper. Our first idea was to locate the kitchen close to the living door (upper in the picture) but we would like to mantain the garden. Thanks in advance for any kind of help!! Rodri

Here in so cal there are some great ways to landscape a yard with less water plants but still look green. For the fence u could soften it with vines or put leafy plants behind it. I don't have a problem with the fence as it is typical socal style. Feel free to look at my landscape photos in my profile. I create landscape designs for the so cal area.
