stages of a home remodel

We've been thinking about a kitchen (plus adjacent rooms) remodel since we bought our house almost 4 years ago, but so far haven't been able to move passed the "figuring out the layout" stage. We've put a rediculous amount of time into learning new software and trying to figure out the layout ourselves with every now and then some feedback from Interior Designer friends. We've also talked with several contractors who claimed they'd help with the layout planning, then either flaked out because the space is awkward/challenging to plan or referred us to an architect. We finally bit the bullet and hired an architect. I am so anxious to move forward! After about a week we received an initial sketch, and now it's been weeks that we've been waiting for his follow up (somehow we picked the architect who was going on vacation a week after we hired him).

Is there anything we can do for the next steps while we wait?

We now (at least) have a line-up of contractors we like who we can eventually bid the project out to.

One of the services the architect can do after we have the layout is "construction documents". What do these entail, is it necessary to have the architect do them? Is there anything we can prep now for those?

So far my husband has been against thinking at all about materials, style, etc until we have a layout nailed down. How soon should we start working that out?

Thanks!
