How did they build this fireplace . Love the exposed concrete board look. How to build?

    The most important factor is to find a mason experienced with refractories and masonry combustion units. In recent years a good amount of my business has been repairing and correcting exploding,poorly built and designed outdoor fireplaces.
    This is very disappointing, expensive and in one case dangerous. The two primary reasons are landscapers being tempted to sell and construct a fireplace on a project and inexperienced masons. It has been decades since masonry fireplaces were common place and much of the younger generation has no experience.
    It is critical to spend the time to ask questions specific to masonry combustion units (masonry fireplace, masonry oven, masonry heater) in your interview process.
    Again, some of the fireplaces I've had to correct were beautifully done on the outside and exploded brick all out in front of the hearth after only a firing or two.
    Properly designed, you'll enjoy a lifetime of use. Ask the right questions.

      That is a beautiful piece by Jason! A rich mixture of concrete is key as well as a lot of wrapping and vibrating of the form to settle into the grain. To really have the grain show through the boards can be blasted to get more relief.

      Beautiful work! Poured in place is not always possible, another way to get this look is to use our board form concrete tiles or paneling. www.2stone.ca for more information. Here is some photos of our product installed.

      While everyone is enjoying the fireplace, and it is a delight, I'm focusing on the battered walls of the main house. Awesome detailing for this one! Would love to pour over the construction plans to discover some of the hidden details.
