Kitchen - the finishing touch

After more than 2 years in the planning and nearly a year since we began ripping it out, my kitchen is nearly finished. The cooker hood is on order and we've got to fit the shelves above breakfast bar and coffee machine and the skirting and door frames.

BUT, I've ordered so many tile samples I've lost count.

The only one I've liked is the pale grey tile on the right in photo 3, but I think it's too big. So now I'm stuck.

I'm not desperate to do the splashback, I would rather wait and find something I love, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

I know I want a flat tile, not beveled. White looks really stark, so I think it needs some colour, but I don't want to distract from the cranberry cooker and sofa.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated please.

Hi Laura. I agree with minnie, I think handmade metro tiles are a good idea. I used them in my kitchen (see photo).

We've made shelves out of left over worktop for above the breakfast bar.
I have ordered cranberry tile samples but none of them have matched. I'll be honest, I love colour, but patterns petrify me, so I'll have to have a think and see if I'm brave enough.

Hi Laura. The kitchen looks great. Are you tiling just behind the hob or all the way around? How high are you tiling if you're adding shelves? I must admit I could see brick working in here but not sure how long that ŵall is so could cost a fortune ( if you like brick of course!)

@Cruca : Thank you for responding We both signed the original AND a mid-renovations updated contract, and both totalled 40.000. However, at the very end, he recognised an error on the final total, and explained that if I add up all the individual items, it totals 50.000. I understand, but he knew my budget was 40.000, and now because the work is finished, I can't even remove or reduce any of the work. It just seems unfair, because everyone could say that all the time. I trusted my builder, and as it was a printed document, I assumed all his calculations were correct!

I had planned to tile all the around approximately 40-50cm depending on the tile size. There's no definite height for the shelves yet, but I've placed power sockets at the approximate heights which gives me a bit of leeway. Part of the kitchen is an existing extension so the ceiling heights are different - 2.7m and 2.3m - would tiling all the up draw to much attention to the different heights?

I need around 8m in length for tiles, it was just deciding on the height

I think if you tiled to the ceiling it would highlight the difference ( depending on colour) however I do like the fact you have piers etc as it adds interest. I do wonder how you'd finish it by the breakfast bar though? have you considered just telling the recess behind the oven? A herringbone pattern could look nice? Have you also considered green tiles to go with the cranberry? Or maybe a handmade metro tile which would soften it or even a crackle glaze

I like the colour of the grey one as well but agree that it might be a little large for a kitchen splashback. I would recommend Fired Earth for a lovely range of tiles - this seems like a good colour match on a smaller scale:

I like the tile in picture 3 but in a cream colour instead of grey..You may have to look and see what size will suit around sockets and such like. Good luck!

Have you thought about glass tiles? I'm thinking a plain clear glass upstanding all the way round your surfaces just about 15cm high and then a splashback behind the cooker in the same. I do like the grey tiles, the darker grey time is the right colour but too dark a tone the lighter grey is the right tone but slightly too green, it needs a little more blue before it fits in with your grey units.

Hello,

There are a couple of option you could go for. On the first image you can see these glass tiles that look quite different and give depth to the kitchen.

You could also go for white tile and grey grout, or other way around.

I think combining two colours could also create a good look, perhaps you could add a stripe of a different colour. It is always nice to repeat elements, I love the wooden work you have, the colour and style of cooker and I see you have a clock in the same colour. Would you consider repeating that colour?

The last image it is too busy but you may understand what I mean about colours and repeating them.

By the way, the overall look is pretty good be proud of it.

oh, please definitely explore doing a pattern design to build on the real unique charm of the kitchen you have created. i see delft blue. But keep the colours in a subtle muted tone) so it is not hectic, or in your face.

Mandarin Stone do a lovely glazed tile called Monastir Dove. I toyed with this for some time (also got several samples), in the end went for white only because it didn't match our counter tops howevr the monastir dove it's still my favourite colour.

Beautiful kitchen and you're completely right, introducing another eye catching colour wouldn't work. Have you considered plain glass spashback? You could have the lovely light grey (you have already found the colour you like) and as you don't like bevelled, why not go with completely smooth? Few inches above the counter and a full big grey glass behind the cooker. It would look lovely.

everyone has good ideas. your choice of tile (lighter one) is nice. i wasn't going to comment, but then saw this photo on a site, and made me think of this thread haha i wouldn't have suggested it, but MAYBE a pattern could look cool, too??

Your kitchen is very nice. I do think it could use something (besides white or grey) to add a bit more personality.

HI Laura! Great kitchen, bet it will look amazing once it's all done! I think the grey tiles or as allyallyally3 says the white with the grey grout. I think stick to something slick and clean lined in this kitchen.

You can always add some pattern and some more cranberry toned pieces on the shelving you mentioned. Let me know if you ever need any help with selecting artwork for your home!

Lovely kitchen. You're right to take care with the choice of tiles. They will bring together the dark grey, cranberry and oak and help you to choose the final wall colour as well. From the photos, it appears that you have one window, providing light to the entire room, so it's important to keep the tiles and paint fairly light, but also to think about balance,

Have a look at http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod41606/section0/hong-kong-autumn-mix-brick-mosaic.html from Topps Tiles. It combines all the colours you've already used and will introduce a pale grey for the walls.

What kind of extraction do you have for your cooker? You could tile that area up to the top of the tall unit and across to the break in your wall, then continue as an upstand of 150mm around the remaining worktops. This would keep costs down. Make sure to use a scrubbable paint like Dulux Diamond.

The room is south facing and the photos I uploaded don't really do it justice as they were taken at night.
There's French doors just after the breakfast bar and the back door opposite the cooker is half glass.
The cooker hood we've ordered is the classic Rangemaster in the same cranberry. I have considered getting the matching cranberry splashback for behind the cooker, but then I'm stick as to what to do with the rest of the kitchen.

Lovely kitchen, and the pale grey tile would certainly set off your colour scheme. Simple suggestion, have you thought about using it with the short side to the top? It would make the space look bigger and you may only need to use one row, if all you are wanting is a splash back.

Have you considered a white subway tile with dark grey grout ( sorry about the image). It's bright and adds a bit of pattern to all the block colours. Cool kitchen, by the way.

Thanks Tara, I like dark grout, just not with light tiles - reminds be of public toilets - sorry sorry I know it's quite 'in' and a lot of people like it, just not for me :-)
Seen some gorgeous tiles in Fired Earth, but waaaaaay out of budget.
Still undecided but I'm waiting for pay day this week :-/

Hi Laura. So I finally figured out something about the tiles which you asked me about. The photo is from Robert Mondavi home. Mondavi Winery owner. I still can't figure out where the tiles came from, but I'm going to have to assume we probably can't afford them??? They are beautiful......

I did, however on my journey through tile land, find the tiles in the second photo - I thought you might like them. They would look great in your kitchen. Topps Tiles. Misty Fjord Herringbone Honed. On sale! They had an abundance of great tiles.

I think glass tiles are a great idea (given by Revive your space), it'd definitely lighten up and give a bit more depth to your kitchen... a light grey or clear colour would look beautiful. I also love the idea of the cranberry glass tile in one of the walls, it's a bold choice.

I think the pale grey tile is too cold. For some reason I just don't like it and think it tips the room into something not as funky looking.

I'd go for a small muted (very pale greys) tile laid in a herringbone/chevron pattern, or plain white metro tiles with grey grout. I'm not a fan of grey grout and white metro tiles generally, but I think they would look absolutely great in this room!

7 months later and I've still got the tile samples propped up against the wall.
I'm just too fussy - it has to be a plain tile, I'm not one for pattern in my own home. Haven't looked for a while - I need to spend a day shopping around.

I would most definitely recommend a Carrara marble tile 305mm X 75mm. I have used them in a herringbone style for this shower cubical. Looks stunning.

I think plain white; otherwise your introducing too many colours into the room and it will lose its elegance.
