We have a significant number of customers who have us paint the stair rails (including the stair treds as well) and it looks fantastic. Are you looking for advise on type of paint to use, color, to do or not to do?? I'd be more than happy to help.

i like white balusters and risers, wood treads, and a glossy black banister.

This is an after photo of what we did for one of our customers. Her staircase is the first thing you see when you walk into her home, so our color specialist wanted to create a wow factor rather than an awkward entrance without personality. Project- Painted rails and treads in Black with white risers.

How long does the painting of treads and handrail last before it starts to show scratches from shoes and rings that people have on while gripping the rail? I have usually leaned people away from doing this for just those reasons.

i wouldnt paint treads. risers, done in a semi gloss is very scrubbable. the handrail in high gloss oil based paint was unchanged in the 6 years after i painted it (then i moved away).

if i had to have painted treads (like wall to wall was removed, leaving paint-grade wood or worse) i'd paint them a dark color and have a runner. actually, thats what my current house has.

Painting stair treads I can't comment on, just because I haven't seen it done much, and, other than a basement stair, can't imagine why anyone would want to do such a thing, but, hey, to each his own. As for painting handrails, I've seen it done a lot. And the result is always the same. You have to keep on painting it, because people's hands are messy, and sweaty. And unless you paint it really dark, or black, it will look tired rather quickly. And, depending on the type of paint, it can also get very gummy, and, or sticky. The best bet is to stain. And if it's old just replace it, using a professional stair/rail guy and stain it right by using a professional painter/stainer.

Approximately how much does it cost to have stairs and railing painted?

Depends on size and style of stair, obviously, but anywhere from $500 to $5,000. Typically @ $800-$,2000.

Painting the treads might work if you have a carpet runner or tread carpet so that you are not walking on the paint. You might consider leaving the treads natural/stain and painting the risers a different color? I would try and keep the railing unpainted as well if possible, if you are covering up an existing mess, paint it dark brown or black.
