Impact-resistant windows are part of the story, but you may want to install hurricane shutters as well.

Why would I install shutter if I have high wind impact resistant windows and doors?
In Miami, we replaced windows and shutters with impact resistant windows. They are great.

Is anyone familiar with Atrium Safe Harbor brand?

    thank you

As a manufacturer of impact-resistant windows, there's much mis-information out there about how theses windows are designed to function. Our windows are Dade County certified and the following is what meets their stringent standards:

In the" Impact" industry, the outer window pane is called the "sacrificial lite." Although strong, it will break with significant impact. The inner pane is made with a special laminate. It, too, may break if hit with a 2 x 4, but the way it breaks is important. It will shatter into hundreds of small pieces that tend to hang together. The goal is to avoid having dangerous shards of glass flying around inside your home, possibly causing significant damage to people and property. If a window manufacturer tries to tell you their glass is impervious to all flying debris, common sense tells you that simply isn't true. We would rather be honest with people, and that's why some homeowners will choose to add shutters.

The Earthwise Windows Impact specialist in the FL area is Eastern Architectural Systems in Ft. Myers, 561-533-6061. They're great folks and they can tell you about all the other durability features built into our windows, including welded frame corners and more.

    Hope these basic facts help.
