What makes some island range hoods so cheap?

Why are the range hoods in the shopping section so much cheaper than the other bigger brands. Is it worth paying the extra money and if so, why?

    Several reasons:

1.) Grade of stainless steel. There are different types of steel, some better than others. The "400 series" steel is not as corrosion-resistant as "300 series" steel. For example, AISI 440 stainless steel isn't truly stainless, it will discolor and rust eventually, while the AISI 304 steel contains 18% chrome and 8% nickel, which will keep it looking brand-new even years later.

Cheap manufacturers use 400 series steel, since it's more bendable and easier to work with. AISI 304 steel will wear out tooltips 4X faster, but the end result is worth it.

Easy way to tell: stick a magnet onto the hood. If it sticks, the steel is 400-series. The 300-series steel is non-magnetic. As a matter of fact, some high-end refrigerator manufacturers put a sheet of cheap steel into the door, behind the high-end steel, for the sole purpose of letting the fridge magnets actually stick!

2.) Quality of workmanship. This covers everything from whether the seams are welded and seamlessly polished, or just line-welded and left to look uneven... tolerances of the chimney covers that can make them look seamless, or show an ugly "division line"... evenness of edges, etc.

3.) Quality of internal components. A $ 300 range hood will have an "off-the-shelf" generic blower sourced from the cheapest possible source in China, while a $ 2000 range hood will have a quality blower made in Germany or Italy, and designed specifically for range hood operation. Cheap transformers, cheap contact switches, and other electrical/electronic parts, combined with the harsh environment that a range hood needs to operate in (heat + moisture), will make cheap range hoods fail much more often than high-quality ones.

3.) Warranty. Regardless of what promises a distributor makes on their website, consider this: how long has the company been in business, and what's the likelihood that they will still be there when you have an issue?

A cheap hood is a complete waste of money in my experience. Won't do the job it needs to do, moving air. Buy quality mechanicals that will last the life of your mortgage and beyond.

Cheapness is what makes them cheap. Duh.
