Where to find organic latex upholstery foam?
I have tried local stores in Philadelphia and tried the suppliers that my upholsterer uses and have found nothing. It is easy to find a mattress that is GOLS but harder to find upholstery foam. I found one retailer on the West Coast but she really encouraged me to find someone on the East Coast as she said shipping from her would be ridiculously expensive and she and I would both love to have a smaller carbon footprint on this project!
My 93 year old grandma just died. I love her and I love her sofa. It is pretty ugly but the best place in the world to sleep. I already have a reupholstered black sofa and would like to make hers match the one in the picture. I have been reading a lot about upholstery foam and decided I would like to use GOLS. Here is where I learned about it. I know there are many less expensive ways to go, but I am interested in GOLS. http://oecotextiles.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/foam-for-upholstery-cushions/

Autor originalhace 9 añosIt is disappointing to read that you could not find anything either. I have called lots of specialty upholstery supply stores in Philadelphia and could not find anything. I have tried a number of upholsterers too.printesa
hace 9 añosMaybe mattress stores that sell organic mattresses could help. There is the yourorganicbedroom.com (store is in Paoli, pa) and theorganicbedroom.com (in North Carolina).Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design
hace 9 añosHi. This might sound obvious but have you tried Googling "organic products", "organic foam" and similar phrases? Another thought is that an organic retailer online might have a resource.Kendrah
Autor originalhace 9 añosThe online foam retailers I have found are all in California, which is really like a different country when it comes to organic products. Google searches usually only yield mattresses and mattress stores purchase from manufacturers so they don't know a lot about who supplies the actual foam that the manufacturers use. Good suggestions though.printesa
hace 9 añosMost of the organic foam products are in California and Oregon (Oregon is better when it comes to being green:)). Contacting someone from there who sells this might be willing to help. Of course, it doesn't make sense financially, but if they are Eco-conscious, they will:)Kendrah
Autor originalhace 9 añosI found someone in California who sells it, but they were so eco-conscious that they did not want to sell it to me because of the ridiculous carbon footprint of shipping to the East Coast. At least she truly stands by her beliefs!
Thanks for your Paoli suggestion. I did some more calling around yesterday, including to the Paoli store you sent the link to. They sent me to one of their suppliers who sells non-organic latex that they say is 90% non-synthetic latex and 10% some other chemical gel that they did not know what it was. They gave me the info for their manufacturer and when I looked at the manufacturer's website I became a bit more skeptical. But I will do some more investigation and report back. Happy Thanksgiving.everdebz

hace 9 añosThanks for the update. I'll ask around here, too (I'm about 20-30 minutes away from Philly). Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!leclair-hyett design
hace 9 añosHas anyone found a source yet? I am desperately seeking a supplier in the NY state or ONtario, Canada regions. I'm receiving an increasing number of requests from clients who would like to re-upholster their vintage furniture using only earth friendly products - latex, wool or cotton batting, etc.

hace 8 añosI've been researching, and found Foam Order in San Francisco. They have a variety of natural foam shapes, but also offer a custom service. Foam Source in Boulder, CO is another supplier for those closer to that area. Hope this is helpful

hace 8 añosI’m sorry I did not find this conversation earlier. I have struggled with the same frustrations - as an ‘organic’ furniture designer (2009-11), and organic/natural upholstery specialist since 2011. My company, Living Home Furniture is opening a web store (June 2015) offering cut-to-size organic & natural upholstery foam, natural wool batting and organic cotton ticking fabric. Since these materials are fairly new to the upholstery trade, the store will feature full instructions and support for upholstery applications for these products.
100% Natural vs Organic:In my research into retail foam suppliers, I found the same answers you have found: Foam Order in California, and Foam Source in Colorado, which offer 100% natural (but not organic) latex at this time. In fact I have not been able to find a retail source for custom-cut organic latex at all - just one of multiple reasons I am opening this online store.
Located in Livingston, Montana, I sell GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified 100% organic latex, which comes from a west coast supplier (unfortunately I have not yet found an east coast supplier for organic latex). To minimize the carbon footprint for the 100% natural latex, we can drop ship Oeko-Tex certified 100% natural latex foam from our east coast supplier.
If you have any questions about the use of latex for upholstery or would like to place an order prior to the opening of our online store, feel free to call me (Carla Pyle) at 406-223-3834. You can also find additional information at LivingHomeFurniture.com. I hope this helps.leclair-hyett design
hace 8 añosThank you! Will you also be selling organic fabric? I find it very difficult to source organic upholstery fabric that is not prohibitively expensive.

hace 8 añosYou're welcome! I'm sorry I won't be selling organic fabric, at least not initially. But I am working on an Organic Fabric Buying Guide, which I will be sharing soon. If you have any recommendations I would love to include them.

hace 8 añosI know this post is a little old, but I came across it in my search for latex foam cut to size for a cushion. I wanted to update it with new information as I found a supplier and manufacturer on the East Coast.
I ordered foam through KTT Enterprises http://www.kttenterprises.com/index.html. They're based in CT and a manufacturer of latex foam, so they're prices are good as well. They're service was good and they do cut-to-size foam.
I hope this is helpful to others!

hace 8 añosYou can buy organic upholstery fabric at O Ecotextiles (aka Two Sisters O Ecotextiles). Also Brentano also has several organic upholstery fabrics.

hace 7 añosI am glad you found a source. I am on the West coast (best coast) and could not help with specific vendors.
I found the articles/blog posts at Ekla Home and European Sleep works to be particularly interesting as far as understanding Latex foam. http://www.eklahome.com/cushioning/, https://sleepworks.com/mattress/natural-latex-cushioning/
Both of these sources mention the manufacturer of the foam, and it might be worth calling or emailing these vendors to see if any upholstery supply retailers stock their foam.
If it is any comfort, the latex sap was probably sourced in South America, and manufactured in Europe, so the carbon footprint from the West coast to the east is less important in the overall footprint of the product. Yeah, I guess that would not make you feel much better........
Two Sisters Ecotextiles
hace 7 añosI think it's important to verify that the latex foam is GOLS certified, because in the USA, it's legal to advertise latex foam as "100% natural" even if it contains up to 30% Styrene Butadiene. We (Two Sisters Ecotextiles - formerly O Ecotextiles) just introduced a new retail website: www.twosistersecotextiles.com, where you can find affordable organic fabrics!
